INDIANAPOLIS – Facing their third of five Division I opponents to start the season, the UIndy women's tennis team ran away from cross-town rival Butler in a 7-2 victory Wednesday evening inside the UIndy Tennis Center.
The Greyhounds (2-1) had fallen to Butler (1-6) in each of the last three seasons, including a 6-1 defeat last year. Wednesday's win also secured a "Circle City sweep," pairing with last Saturday's
9-0 rout against IUPUI.
The Greyhounds secured the opening three points in short order, as the trio of doubles bouts finished within minutes of each other.
Hanna Volikova and
Florence Renard bounced back from Sunday's defeat with an 8-3 victory against the Butler junior duo of Bailey Padgett and Rachell Sutton on the first court.
Shortly after, reigning GLVC Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Stephanie Hirsch paired with
Selenay Heper to defeat Butler's Jordan Minnick and Caroline McAuley, 8-2, remaining undefeated.
The Olsen twins – Dana and Paige – cruised past the Bulldogs' Kailey Eaton and Nina Bertino in No. 3 doubles, 8-2, clinching the third UIndy point.
Needing only two points to win the overall match, UIndy went on to claim four of the six singles contests to complete the well-balanced effort.
Hirsch was the first player finished, having defeated Carla O'Byrne 6-2, 6-0 in No. 3 singles. The redshirt-junior improved to 3-0 in dual matches this season.
Volikova followed with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Padgett, also moving to 3-0 for the young dual match season and 14-1 overall.
Her doubles partner, Renard, dropped Eaton 6-2, 6-1 in No. 2 singles, and Heper claimed the last Greyhound point in a close 7-5, 7-5 win against Callie Schmit.
UIndy's Division I slate continues Friday, as the Hounds will go head-to-head against Valparaiso at 3 p.m. ET in the UIndy Tennis Center.
