QUINCY, Ill. – On a cold day at QU Stadium, the No. 16-ranked UIndy baseball team looked to bounce back on Saturday after a loss to GLVC West Division powerhouse Quincy the day before.
Â
The Greyhounds (10-4) struck early and held off the Hawks (9-6) to even up the series with a 9-4 win in game one. But the Hounds fell in a deep hole in game two as Quincy scored early and often on their way to a 12-3 win in game two.
Â
Macy Holdswroth drove in a team-high four runs and
John Eberhardt crossed the plate four times on Friday, leading the UIndy offense. Holdsworth,
Brendan Dudas and
Devon Hensley all recorded multiple hits for the Hounds.
Â
GAME ONE: #16 UIndy 9 - #25 Quincy 4
The Hawks jumped out in front with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. UIndy would answer in short order though, plating five runs on four straight batters to take their first lead of the series.
Â
Holdsworth got the Hounds on the board after drawing a bases loaded walk and
Blake Richardson followed with a bases loaded walk of his own.
Conor White put UIndy in front with a sacrifice fly and
Demetrius Webb closed out the scoring with a two-run single.
Â
The Hawks climbed back to within a run after scoring in both the third and fifth innings. Quincy put runners on second and third with one out later in the fifth inning but
Michael Schalasky was able to keep the Hawks at bay with a strikeout and a ground out to end the inning.
Â
UIndy got some much needed insurance from Holdsworth in the seventh when the sophomore shortstop drove in two with a double down the right field line. Two innings later, Richardson added to the lead with an RBI single and scored later in the inning on a Quincy error.
Â
Brian Wichman made the start for the Hounds, giving up three runs on four hits with five walks and six strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Jake Sprinkle (1-0) earned the win for UIndy after tossing two hitless innings of work in relief.
Â
GAME TWO: #25 Quincy 12 - #16 UIndy 3
Quincy pounced on UIndy starter
Reid Werner right from the get-go, opening the scoring just two batters into the bottom of the first. Quincy would plate two runs in each of the first two innings, but the crushing blow was handed out in the bottom of the third when Noah Snyder cleared the bases with a grand slam to make it 8-0.
Â
UIndy got on the board with a pair of unearned runs in the fourth but Quincy turned right back around and scored three more runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 11-2. Perreira capped the scoring for UIndy in the top of the seventh with an RBI double.
Â
Werner (2-1) suffered his first loss of the year after allowing six runs on five hits over 2 1/3 innings of work. Mark Niebrugge (2-1) gave up three unearned runs on four hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts to earn the win for Quincy.
Â
The Greyhounds are back in action on Friday, Mar. 17 when the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus make the trip to Indianapolis. First pitch from Greyhound Park is set for 1:00 p.m.
