Early offensive barrage, Schalasky's shut down performace gives Hounds win over Battlers

INDIANAPOLIS – Behind eight nearly spotless innings from Michael Schalasky, the No. 17-ranked UIndy baseball team kicked off a three-game weekend series against Alderson Broaddus with an 11-2 win at Greyhound Park on Friday.

Schalasky scattered six hits and allowed a pair of runs with three strikeouts, matching his career-long outing with eight sparkling frames pitched. Kyle Orloff drove in three runs and Storm Joop scored four times as UIndy improved to 11-4 on the year.

Jordan Martin drove in both runs for the Battlers, who dropped to 6-7 on the year with the loss.

UIndy's offense provided their sophomore hurler with all the run support he needed over the first two innings.  The Hounds got on the board with three runs in the first with RBIs coming from Orloff, Macy Holdsworth and Blake Richardson.

The second inning saw the Greyhounds continue to grind out at-bats, and they were rewarded with three more runs. Orloff plated two with a bases-loaded single and Brendan Dudas would steal home later in the inning to make it 6-0.

Schalasky retired 15 of the first 17 batters he faced, holding the Battlers to just one hit over the first five innings. Alderson Broaddus created their first threat of the day with back-to-back one out singles in the sixth, but Schalasky induced a pair of pop outs to end the inning.

UIndy made it 7-0 after a bases loaded infield single from John Eberhardt in the seventh. The Battlers broke up the shutout on Martin's two-run double in the eighth. The Greyhounds capped the scoring with four more runs in the bottom of the inning with RBIs coming from Joop, Holdsworth and Nick Miller.

Schalasky was lifted after 100 pitches, giving way to Jake Sprinkle who tossed a perfect ninth to close things out. Joop, Orloff, Richardson and Devon Hensley all had two hits and Hensley became the first Greyhound this year to steal two bases in one game.

The Hounds can clinch the weekend series with the Battlers on Saturday afternoon. First pitch at Greyhound Park is set for 1:00 p.m.
