Battlers tame Hounds, even up weekend series with 7-3 win on Saturday

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 17-ranked UIndy baseball team looked to secure their weekend series win on Saturday afternoon against Alderson Broaddus University.

After falling in an early three-run hole, the Greyhounds pulled to within a run midway through the game. But the UIndy (11-5) bats were unable to sustain any momentum as Alderson Broaddus (7-7) evened up the weekend series with a 7-3 win. It was just the second home loss of the year for the Greyhounds.

The Battlers got on the board in the top of the second, stringing together a two-out rally against UIndy starter Brian Wichman. After walking the first two batters, Wichman battled back with back-to-back strikeouts before Cody Cowart reached on a catcher's interference to load the bases.

Tyler Amedure would make the Hounds pay with a two-run single and later in the inning, another run scored on a throwing error to make it 3-0 Battlers.

UIndy left a pair of runners stranded in both the first and third innings before finally breaking through in the fourth. Macy Holdsworth got into scoring position with a one-out double and came in to score on Blake Richardson's RBI double down the right field line. Richardson would eventually advance to third and score later in the inning on a wild pitch to make it 3-2.

Alderson Broaddus put some distance between the two teams in the top of the fifth, scattering five hits in the innings that led to three runs and a 6-2 Battlers lead.

Down 7-2 in the eighth, the Hounds closed the gap to four when Richardson drew a bases loaded walk to bring the tying run to the plate with one out in the inning. But UIndy would leave the bags full after Nick Miller struck out and Jake Perreira flied out to end the rally.

John Eberhardt, Brendan Dudas and Nick Miller all went 2-for-4 on the day, account for 2/3 of the Greyhounds' hits.

Wichman (0-1) lasted just 1 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on one hit while fanning two and walking four. Randy Dobnak (2-2) picked up the win for the Battlers, conceding two earned runs on nine hits over 7 1/3 innings of work. Mitchell Griffiths walked two and struck out one over the final 1 2/3 innings, picking up his first save of the year.

The teams will wrap up their weekend series on Sunday afternoon at Greyhound Park. First pitch for the rubber match is set for noon.
