Jones drives in six as No. 17 Greyhounds secure series win over Battlers

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 17-ranked UIndy baseball team secured their third home series win in as many tries on Sunday afternoon, taking the rubber match from Alderson Broaddus, 13-3.

After a slow start offensive, the Greyhounds (12-5) blew the game open with six runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth. Dylan Jones had three hits and drove in six runs which included his first home run of the year coming via the inside-the-park variety. Brendan Dudas drove in three and Storm Joop scored a trio of runs in support.

UIndy got on the board in their first trip to the plate. Joop reached on an error to open the inning and came in to score later on John Eberhardt's RBI ground out. UIndy would threaten to stretch the lead in the third and fourth innings, but each time a Greyhound was cut down at the plate to end the inning.

Alderson Broaddus tied things up in the top of the fourth on an RBI infield single from Kosta Kafes, but the UIndy offensive onslaught was right around the corner.

Dudas puts the Hounds in front with a one-out RBI single and UIndy added two more when Joop scored on a wild pitch and Dudas came home on a throwing error to make it a 4-1 game. With runners on second and third and one out, Jones ripped a liner into deep left that got past the Battlers' Cam Murray and into the corner. That enabled Jones to hustle all the way around for an inside-the-park home run and a 7-1 UIndy lead.

The offensive barrage continued in the sixth with a two-run single from Dudas and a bases loaded triple from Jones that stretched the Greyhound lead to 12-1. Lawan Rollins capped the scoring for the Hounds with a run-scoring single in the eighth, his first career RBI.

Reid Werner (3-1) was solid in five innings of work, scattering six hits and striking out a pair on 71 pitches. Jake Shaw earned his first save of the year after allowing five hits and fanning three over the final four innings.

Zach Salmon (2-1) suffered his first defeat of the year after allowing six runs on four hits with five walks and one strikeout over 4 1/3 innings of work. The Greyhound offense was patient all day long, drawing 12 free passes against Battler pitching.

Next up for the Hounds is a pair of mid-week games against Ohio Dominican. UIndy welcomes the Panthers to Greyhound Park on Wednesday (Mar. 22) afternoon with game one getting underway at 1:00 p.m.
