GAME ONE: UIndy 11 – Oakland City 3
The Hounds fell behind in the top of the second when Tyler Stolz launched a two-out solo shot over the left field wall, but the Hounds made sure the lead didn't last long. UIndy plated two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.
Â
UIndy opened up the flood gates in the third, extending the lead to 6-1 on a pair of two-run singles from
Kyle Orloff and Holdsworth.
Â
Joop made it a 7-1 game with a solo home run in the fifth and Eberhardt followed suit with a lead-off blast to open the fifth.
Devon Hensley made it 10-1 later in the fifth with a two-run double and Holdsworth added the final UIndy run with a sac fly in the sixth.
Â
It was more than enough support for starter
Reid Werner (2-0). The freshman hurler needed just 69 pitches to get through six innings, allowing one run on five hits with no walks anda season-high six strikeouts.
Â
Alec Sandefer (0-2) took the loss for Oakland City, allowing six runs on three hits with five walks and three strikeouts over three innings of work.
Â
GAME TWO: UIndy 6 – Oakland City 2
Oakland City opened the scoring once again in game two, taking advantage of a pair of Greyhound errors to score twice in the top of the first inning. The damage could have been worse, but UIndy starter
Brian Wichman was able to get out a bases loaded jam with an inning-ending strikeout of Max Lanham to keep the damage at two.
Â
The Hounds picked their pitcher up in the bottom of the inning, evening things up on an Eberhardt RBI double and a bases loaded walk drawn by
Conor White.
Â
After a 32-pitch first inning, Wichman settled down and retired the last six batters he faced. The Hounds gave their starter some support to work with in the second, plating a trio of runs to take a 5-2 lead. Eberhardt put UIndy in front for good with an RBI single and Holdsworth followed with sac fly.
Nick Miller would score an unearned run later in the inning, coming home on a throwing error.
Â
Both offenses would go silent until the top of the sixth, when the Oaks loaded the bases against UIndy reliever
Chris Boettcher with two outs.
Dylan Stutsman took over and left the bags full, keeping the Hounds up three with an inning-ending ground out.
Â
UIndy tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the inning when pinch-runner Lawan Rollins scored on a wild pitch. Stutsman worked a perfect seventh to nail down the win, earning his fourth save of the year.
Â
Michael Schalasky (2-0) picked up the win for UIndy, taking over after Wichman was lifted following three innings of one-hit ball. The sophomore allowed two hits and fanned four over two innings of work. Tristen Cummings (0-2) was saddled with the loss for Oakland City after giving up five runs on five hits over two innings.
Â
UIndy heads out on the road next weekend for their toughest test of the season to date. The Hounds will take on GLVC West Division favorites and No. 15-ranked Quincy in a three-game set, starting on Friday, Mar. 10 at 2:00 p.m. eastern time.
