QUINCY, Ill. – The No. 16-ranked UIndy baseball team opened up a three-game series against No. 25 Quincy University on Thursday afternoon in a showdown between the two pre-season GLVC division favorites.
Â
The Hounds fell behind early and struggled for most of the afternoon offensively. UIndy (9-3) was held without a hit for the first 6 1/3 innings of play while Quincy (7-4) surged out in front and never looked back. The Hounds cut into the lead in the seventh, but weren't able to make up the entire deficit in a 9-5 loss.
Â
Quincy jumped on UIndy starter
Jake Shaw right away, opening the scoring just two batters in on an RBI single from Dominic Miles. The Hawks added two more runs in the first and plated three runs in the second, chasing Shaw from the game with two down in the inning.
Â
The Hawks tacked on to the lead with another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to open up a 9-0 lead. UIndy would finally break through in the top of the seventh, stringing together five straight hits that brought in all five of their runs. Dudas broke up the shut out with an RBI single and both Webb and Joop would follow later in the inning with two-run singles of their own.
Â
UIndy put a runner on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, but weren't able to bring either runner across as the Hawks closed out the win.
Â
Shaw (3-1) took the loss for UIndy after giving up six runs on seven hits with two walks in 1 2/3 innings of work. Riley Martin (3-1) was brilliant for the Hawks, finishing with four walks and three strikeouts while allowing four runs over 6 1/3 innings of work.
Â
The two GLVC powers will be back at it tomorrow, finishing their three-game series with a double-header at QU Stadium. Game one's first pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. eastern time.
