ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – GLVC play resumed for the No. 12-ranked University of Indianapolis baseball team on Saturday afternoon with the first two games of this weekend's four-game set against the Lewis Flyers.
Â
UIndy (18-9, 3-3 GLVC) walked away with a split in a pair of low-scoring contests. In the opener,
Michael Schalasky turned in seven strong innings as UIndy held on for a 4-2 win. Lewis (6-18, 2-4 GLVC) would even up the series with a 4-3 victory in game two.
Â
Macy Holdsworth,
Kyle Orloff and
Storm Joop all had three hits and
Dylan Jones belted his second home run of the year on Satruday. Six different Greyhounds drove in a run on the day.
Â
GAME ONE: UIndy 4 – Lewis 2
The Greyhound bats got to work right away, scoring in their first trip to the plate. Joop led off the game with the first of seven UIndy walks and would score two batters later on an RBI double from Holdsworth.
Â
That lead evaporated in no time as Lewis took their first lead of the day with three hits turning into two Flyer runs and a 2-1 lead. UIndy strung together a trio of hits in the second but came up empty handed and left the bags loaded.
Â
Fortunately, it didn't come back to bit the Greyhounds as Lewis was held silent the rest of the way. UIndy drew even in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of a pair of errors to score the tying run.
Â
One inning later, the Hounds took the lead for good.
Brendan Dudas plated the go-ahead run with a safety squeeze that brought
Nick Miller home. One batter later,
Conor White plated an insurance run with a sac fly, brining
Will Smithey home for the final run of the game.
Â
It was all the support Schalasky (4-0) needed as the sophomore hurler allowed just one hit over his final six innings of work. He allowed a total of four hits, two walks and struck out five over six innings.
Chris Boettcher worked a spotless ninth inning to earn his second save of the season.
Â
GAME TWO: Lewis 4 – UIndy 3
A bit of clutch hitting gave the Flyers an early lead in game two. With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the second, Brandon Post poked a single into center, scoring a pair of runs.
Â
UIndy cut the lead in half in the top of the third on Holdsworth's second run-scoring single of the day. The sophomore shortstop laced a two-out single into left, scoring Joop to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Â
Lewis got the run right back in their half of the third and added another run in the bottom of the fourth to stretch the lead to 4-1.
Â
UIndy chipped away at the lead with a
Ryan Wood RBI single in the sixth and came within one on a long home run from Jones in the seventh.
Blake Richardson extended the inning with a two-out single, but was left stranded at first as Holdsworth was retired to end the game.
Â
Jake Shaw (3-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on eight hires over four innings of work. Sam Couch (3-1) went the distance, allowing eight hits on his way to a win for the Flyers.
Â
The two GLVC East rivals bring their weekend series to a close with two more games on Sunday afternoon. First pitch for game one is set for 1:00 p.m. eastern time.
