INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 11 UIndy baseball team opened up a four-game series with Wisconsin-Parkside with two games at Greyhound Park on Friday afternoon.
Â
The Greyhounds (24-12, 8-6 GLVC) struggled to get going all afternoon, dropping the opener, 5-0, before falling in game two, 16-3.
Kyle Orloff accounted for four of the Greyhounds' 10 hits on the day, one of which was his third home run of the year.
Â
GAME ONE: UW-Parkside 5 – UIndy 0
Parkside leadoff hitter Kyle Schulz belted a 3-1 pitch over the left field wall for a lead-off home run and the Rangers never looked back. The Rangers added another run in the first and three in the third, supplying all the offense early on.
Â
The Greyhounds stranded two runners in each of the first, second, fourth and eighth innings as they desperately searched for their first run of the day.
Â
Michael Schalasky (4-1) struggled with his command early on, allowing four runs on four hits with two walks over two innings. Freshman
Christian Beard was dominant over 6 2/3 innings out of the bullpen, scattering four hits and striking out five without allowing a free pass in his longest outing of the year.
Â
Parkside's Nate Stolte (3-0) allowed four hits, walked three and struck out one over six innings of work. Max Widmar earned his third save of the season with three innings of two-hit ball.
Â
GAME TWO: UW-Parkside 16 – UIndy 3
For the second straight game, the Ranger hung a crooked number on the board in the top of the first, scoring five times on five hard-hit balls. Things got worse in the top of the fifth with two more Parkside runners crossing the plate courtesy of a Widmar home run.
Â
After being retired in order over the first four innings, UIndy broke their 18-inning scoreless streak when Orloff led off the bottom of the fifth with a long home run. The Greyhounds added two in their final at-bat on a two-run single from
Jake Perreira, but the game was well out of reach at that point.
Â
Jake Shaw (4-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing four earned runs on eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts over five innings. Mario Samuel (2-4) earned the win for Parkside with 6 2/3 innings of four-hit ball.
Â
The Greyhounds will look to bounce back with two more games against the Rangers on Saturday at Greyhound Park. First pitch is set for noon.
