INDIANAPOLIS – A brilliant performance from sophomore pitcher
Jake Sprinkle highlighted Saturday's double-header split between the No. 11-ranked Greyhounds and the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers.
Â
UIndy (25-13, 9-7 GLVC) took the opener, 7-1, behind Sprinkle's first complete game of the season. In game two, the Rangers offense bounced back with 21 hits on their way to a 21-11 win.
Â
GAME ONE: UIndy 7 – Wisconsin-Parkside 1
The Greyhounds matched their offensive output from Friday in their first trip to the plate on Saturday. With two on and two out in the bottom of the inning,
Kyle Orloff belted a chest-high fastball over the wall in left center for his fourth home run of the year and a 3-0 UIndy lead.
Â
UIndy turned to the long ball once again in the third when
Macy Holdsworth crushed a 2-0 pitch over the center field wall, stretching the lead to 5-0.
Conor White closed out the scoring for UIndy with a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth, his first extra-base hit in nine game that made it 7-1.
Â
It was all in support of Sprinkle, who ran his record to a perfect 5-0 after scattering nine hits, walking two and striking out a pair on 118 pitches. On a day where the wind was howling out to left, Sprinkle managed to induce 13 out via the fly ball.
Â
Nicholas Rana (3-3) lasted just three innings for the Rangers, allowing five runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Â
GAME TWO: Wisconsin-Parkside 21 – UIndy 11
Parkside batted around in the first inning, scoring six runs on seven hits in the inning. The Greyhounds would have an answer in their first trip to the plate as UIndy plated five runs to cut the lead to one. Holdworth and
Dylan Jones each had RBI doubles and
Nick Miller brought in a pair with a triple later in the inning.
Â
Unfortunately, that's as close as the Hounds would get in game two. Parkside plated six more runs in the third and three in the fourth to open up a 15-6 lead. UIndy would get within six late in the game before four Parkside runs in the eighth put the finishing touches on the win.
Â
Reid Werner (4-2) lasted just 2/3 of an inning for UIndy. The freshman was tagged for six runs on six hits before giving way to seven different pitchers to close out the game.
Â
Jones went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Orloff added another multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 with one run driven in and a run scored as well.
Â
The Greyhounds will have a week to recuperate before heading out on the road for a four-game series at Bellarmine starting on Apr. 22. First pitch for game one is set for 1:00 p.m. eastern time.
