LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 12-ranked UIndy baseball team headed south on Friday to open a four-game series with the Bellarmine Knights at Knights Field.
Â
The recent struggles for the Greyhounds (25-15, 9-9 GLVC) continued as Bellarmine (25-15, 12-6 GLVC) secured at least a split after taking both games on Friday.
Â
GAME ONE: Bellarmine 13 – UIndy 0
Trouble started early for the Greyhounds in the opener as Drew Greenwood led off the game with a four-pitch walk. He would score later in the inning on a wild pitch. The Hounds squandered a quality scoring chance in their half of the second when
Kyle Orloff was picked off third with one out in the inning.
Â
Bellarmine added runs in the second and third innings to stretch the lead to three but the back-breaking inning came in the fifth when a pair of RBI doubles led to five Knight runs.
Â
Orloff went 2-for-4 with a double and was the only Greyhound with multiple hits as UIndy managed just five base knocks in game one.
Â
Michael Schalasky (4-2) took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits with three walks and one strikeout over four innings of work. Eddie Mathis (8-2) scattered five hits, walked three and fanned four over seven innings to earn the win for the hosts.
Â
GAME TWO: Bellarmine 6 – UIndy 2
UIndy jumped out to their first lead of the day just two batters into game two.
Storm Joop led off the game with a single and came in to score on a
Blake Richardson double down the right field line. Richardson would come in to score later in the inning on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 Hounds.
Â
Unfortunately, it was the last time the Greyhounds were able to push a run across. UIndy had two runners on with one out in both the third and fourth innings, but couldn't find a way to scratch a run across.
Â
Meanwhile, the Knights responded with one run in the first and three more in the second to take the lead for good. A pair of insurance runs crossed the dish in the third and fifth innings, giving the hosts plenty of cushion the rest of the way.
Â
Joop, Richardson and
Macy Holdsworth all went 2-for-4 in game two. But the rest of the UIndy lineup combined to go just 1-for-16 and the team left seven on base.
Â
Making his first career start,
Christian Beard (1-1) lasted 2 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out two. Hunter Spencer (5-4) scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out four in a complete game effort for the Knights.
Â
The Greyhounds and Knights will wrap up the four-game series with two more on Saturday at Knights Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. eastern time.
