Where are They Now? - Skip Cheeseman

Skip Cheesman was a member of the UIndy Men's Golf team from 1984-88. During his career, Skip served as team captain, and was named Team MVP and All-Conference his sophomore year. Skip and his teammates proved to be a competitive team, receiving national high rankings, and winning head-to-head tournaments against Division I programs.

Skip has many fond memories from his time as a student-athlete at UIndy. He remembers the camaraderie he and his teammates built while traveling to tournaments. However, Skip recalls the memories he formed in the classroom to be the most influential on his future and career.

"My favorite memory as a student, although I didn't think so at the time, was being challenged by Dr. Brooker, Dr. Borden and Dr. Burnell. They pushed me academically, and helped me realize what I was capable of. Juggling golf and a chemistry and math double major prepared me to multitask and not back down from challenges, which has helped me throughout dental school and as a professional."

After graduation, Skip attended Indiana University School of Dentistry and is now a practicing dentist in Plainfield, Indiana. Skip, and his wife Stephanie, a fellow UIndy grad, hope their son will become a member of the UIndy class of 2032. Skip still makes time to play a few rounds of golf a week, and has won numerous club championships and finished third in the Indiana State Publinks tournament.

Since his time as a Greyhound, Skip is proud to see the growth and development of UIndy's campus. He credits the 2012 Super Bowl for bringing the Athletics Recreation Center to campus, which helps enables student-athletes to train and compete at the highest level.

Skip also credits UIndy for helping him understand how to be the best professional he can be. "Student-athletes learn to balance their time and find the energy to meet simultaneous demands. Developing these skills will strengthen them and give them confidence to succeed as a professional."

Skip advises student-athletes to embrace all challenges and setbacks, whether in academics or athletics. "One should not look at a setback as failure, but as an opportunity to improve and grow.  You will later reap the rewards of these experiences both professionally and personally."
