Steinwascher goal lifts Hounds to extra-time win over Southern Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Javier Steinwascher played hero once again for the UIndy men's soccer team on Friday evening, scoring his fourth goal of the season in the 97' to defeat Southern Indiana, 2-1, in extra time.

James Jenkins started the scoring for the Hounds early in the first half on an assist from Benjamin Sierra, his third helper of 2017. Keeper Miles Palmer made three saves in the first half, but the fourth shot on net snuck past the junior to even the match at one apiece just before halftime.

Each team had several chances, but the Screaming Eagles controlled most of the second-half opportunities. Palmer stood tall in net, turning away another five shots on goal to leave the score even. Jenkins nearly notched his second score of the night to give the Hounds a late lead, but drilled the post before Southern Indiana cleared it. The hosts had the final chance of regulation in the final minute after sending a shot off a UIndy defender to force a corner kick, but the defense held steady to force extra time.

Southern Indiana was called for offsides a pair of times early in the first extra session, but the second time proved costly. The Hounds used the setup to get the ball to Josh Ling, who would find Steinwascher for the game-winner.

The win improved UIndy to 5-2 on the season and 4-1 in GLVC action. It was the second straight victory for the Hounds over the Screaming Eagles after the former dropped a 1-0 contest midway through the season to the Screaming Eagles. The Hounds will host Bellarmine from Key Stadium on Sunday afternoon for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.
