Greyhounds sweep Saints to win third straight match

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The UIndy volleyball team swept its way to its second winning streak of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Maryville in straight sets. The win improves the Greyhounds to 9-6 on the season and 4-2 in GLVC matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Greyhounds defense held strong as its done all season thus far. UIndy cruised in the first set, taking over the lead at 2-1 before finishing the frame with the win, 25-19. Teigan Flaws had three of her seven kills in the set, while Rachel Irbe stayed hot off her double-double last night to tally the final two successful attacks of the game.

The Saints jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set and led as late as 19-16 before the Greyhounds finished the frame on a 9-3 run. A Flaws kill put UIndy in striking distance before Julia Kruzan finished the set off with a pair of kills.

The third set proved to be a barn burner between the conference foes. In total, the frame saw nine tie scores and five lead changes. The Greyhounds busted out to a 6-1 lead, but the Saints wouldn't go away easily on their home floor. Maryville took seven points in eight rallies to even the set as the teams traded marks until it was 14 apiece. Irbe's fifth kill of the night gave the Greyhounds a lead they would fail to surrender to finish off the sweep of the Saints.

UIndy held Maryville to .058 hitting, the fourth time in which the Greyhound defense has limited the opposition to under a .100 attacking rate. Six Greyhounds had at least five kills, led by Flaws and Kruzan with seven each. Katie Voelz recorded six kills, while Anna Fehribach and Lauren Koopman joined Irbe with five.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-Koopman led all UIndy attackers with at least five kills, hitting at a .556 clip. It was the third time this season the junior has recorded at least five kills in a match.

-A night after Alexis Waugh had 30 assists for the first time since 2013, the graduate setter and transfer Alyssa Spears dished out nearly-identical dime totals with 16 and 15, respectively.

-Libero Olivia Martin recorded 20 digs for the third straight match, and fifth time overall in 2017. The freshman hasn't made a receiving error since midway through the three-set loss to No. 3 Lewis a week ago.

HOUND BYTES
Head coach Jason Reed: "Koop [Lauren Koopman] had a great day. She was efficient and brought an energy to the match that her teammates fed off of."

"Teigan also had a terrific day offensively. We thought we could execute on a game plan of giving her the ball, and it worked. We're lucky to have her."

"Olivia had a special day. After the first set she really cranked it up and didn't allow a ball to touch the floor. Defensively, she controlled the back court and made it extremely tough for Maryville to score."

"Both setters had a balanced night and distributed the ball very well. We don't give them nearly enough credit for what they do. Because of our 6-2 alignment, their names don't show up as much as others, but we're definitely not winning without Alexis and Alyssa."

GOIN' STREAKIN'
The Greyhounds have won three matches in a row for the second time this season, and the first since the UIndy Invitational on September 8-9. UIndy will ride momentum into Louisville, Ky. this coming Tuesday to battle Bellarmine. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Knights Hall.
