Slow start dooms Hounds in matchup with GLVC’s best

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy women's basketball team (5-12, 2-5 GLVC) fought hard for 40 minutes but couldn't recover from a slow start, as the GLVC-leading Lewis Flyers (13-4, 6-1) earned an 88-63 win at Nicoson Hall Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Led by reigning GLVC Player of the Year Jessica Kelliher, the Flyers came out hot, scoring 14 of the game's first 15 points. Later in the second quarter, Lewis managed a 10-0 run to further up the margin. The Flyers finished the half shooting nearly 60 percent from the field, including a 9-for-17 effort (.529) from behind the arc.

Despite trailing by 23 points at the halfway point, the Hounds came out with a spirited effort in the second half. They outscored the Flyers by three points in the third quarter and continued to battle to the final buzzer.

As a team, the Greyhound put up 41 of their 63 points in the second half. Three Hounds finished in double figures, led by a 15-point performance by senior Devin Ferguson. Senior Tina Negoescu drained three triples on the way to a season-high 13 points, while junior Alexa Bailey added 10 points and five assists.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Bailey also garnered six steals on the afternoon, matching a season high.
- Leading-scorer Martha Burse struggled offensively, as her five points marked the first time this season she failed to reach double figures.
- After sinking a meaningless 3-pointer at the buzzer, Lewis finished the game 12 for 20 from distance, with the resulting percentage of .600 good for a UIndy opponent season best.
- Kelliher finished with 17 points to lead the Flyers – eight below her season average.
- Junior Erin Wood and freshman Taylor Drury each chipped in eight points.

UP NEXT
The Hounds remain at home for three more contests, starting with a Thursday night meeting with Truman State University. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. ET.
