Greyhounds sweep Malone on first day of Midwest Region Crossover

INDIANAPOLIS - The UIndy volleyball team (13-8) kicked off the 2018 edition of the Midwest Region Crossover on Friday afternoon with a sweep of Malone before falling in four sets to No. 5 Ferris State. Katie Voelz paced the Greyhounds on the day, totaling 16 kills on .400 hitting.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. Malone
The Pioneers fought through the first set, but the Hounds' .395 attack percentage proved too much. Malone rattled off three points in a row late in the opening frame, but Taylor Jacquay ended the run with a kill of her own for the Hounds to win, 25-20. Julia Kruzan tallied five kills in the first set.

It was all Greyhounds the final two sets, surrendering just 13 and 15 points, respectively. UIndy finished the match on .340 hitting, as Katie Furlong led the team with 12 kills. Kruzan finished with 10 terminations on .529 hitting, while Voelz totaled her first six kills against the Pioneers.

Alyssa Spears added three kills herself, while dishing out 35 assists, while Olivia Martin scooped up a match-best 14 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. Ferris State
The fifth-ranked Bulldogs hit .325 in the first frame to overcome the Greyhounds, who attacked at a .219 clip. UIndy had its chance to knot the match at one set apiece after tying the second game at 22, but Ferris scored three of the final four points around a kill by Furlong.

The Hounds bounced back with a 25-17 third-set win, limiting the Bulldog attack to just .089. Furlong recorded five kills in the frame, while Emily Ellis and Jacquay each picked up three.

UIndy dug itself too big of a hole in the fourth frame, trailing 10-3 in the early going. Three straight kills from Kruzan and Voelz made the score 17-11 in favor of Ferris State, however, the Bulldogs held on easily to win it, 25-16.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Furlong totaled 24 kills on the day, with 12 each against Malone and Ferris State. The sophomore also picked up 19 digs on the day, including 10 against the Bulldogs.

Voelz came one shy of matching her season-high kill total against Ferris State, and has now reached double figures three times this season. The Warsaw, Ind. native recorded 10 kills against Emmanuel in South Carolina, while knocking down 11 in the conference-opening victory against Quincy.

Martin led each match on Friday with 14 and 21 digs, respectively. After posting 20 digs at Southern Indiana, the sophomore libero has reached at least 20 scoops in two of the past three matches.

Kruzan's 10 kills on .529 hitting against Malone is the highest percentage the junior has hit for with double-digit kills since the Hounds defeated No. 17 Colorado School of Mines on September 1 at the UIndy Invitational. Kruzan recorded nine kills against Ferris State, and has now totaled nine in six matches this season.

Jena Davis picked up 16 digs against Ferris State, which is one shy of her season-best total of 17. Last season, the defensive specialist tallied 25 digs against Missouri-St. Louis, a career high.

UP NEXT
UIndy will wrap up competition at the Crossover tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. against Wayne State before finishing the regular season with eight GLVC matches on the docket.
