Hounds sweep Warriors on final day of Crossover

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy volleyball team (14-8) concluded the 2018 Midwest Region Crossover with a sweep of Wayne State (11-11) on Saturday afternoon, finishing the weekend with a 2-1 record.

Katie Furlong led all hitters with 13 kills on .333 hitting. Taylor Jacquay also recorded 10 kills in the win, as the two Hounds were the only players with double-digit terminations.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Greyhounds attacked at a .297 clip in the first set with Katie Voelz leading the way with four kills. Furlong and Olivia Martin each picked up six digs in the frame, while Alyssa Spears dished out 12 assists on the team's 14 kills.

Wayne State took advantage of UIndy miscues in the second set, while blocking five attacks to lead as late as 21-19. Facing set point, Emily Ellis stepped up for her second kill of the game before Julia Kruzan gave the Hounds a lead it would hold on to win, 27-25.

Reeling off the second-set victory, the Hounds came out firing in the third frame to lead 13-4 after another Furlong kill. UIndy tallied four kills in the next six points, including ones from Lauren Koopman and Spears before freshmen Alex Equihua and Hannah Huppenbauer got in on the fun late. Huppenbauer had one kill, while Equihua recorded four assists and one dig.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
UIndy picked up its seventh sweep of the season on Saturday, and the third in the past four matches. The Greyhounds took down Malone yesterday to open the Crossover after sweeping Southern Indiana in the team's final contest before the event.

The Greyhounds attacked at a .457 clip in the deciding set, their best hitting percentage in a non-fifth set since the opening frame against Southern Indiana on September 14 in Ruth Lilly.

Furlong's 13 kills stretches her streak to four matches now the sophomore has recorded double digits. The Galena, Ill. native has tallied double-figure kills in 21 of the team's 22 matches this season. Furlong also added 10 digs in the win.

Martin led all players with 17 digs on Saturday as the team scooped up 48 in three sets. Jacquay recorded seven in the win, while Jena Davis had six.

Spears finished the match with 36 assists, her fourth straight contest with at least 35 dimes. The junior has reached at least 30 helpers in 19 matches this season.

UP NEXT
The Hounds will wrap up the home portion of their schedule in the next three matches, hosting No. 10 Rockhurst and William Jewell next weekend. Senior day is Saturday at 3 p.m.
