KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Coming off a tough loss Friday afternoon at Truman, the UIndy men's soccer team was looking to rebound when they traveled to Kansas City to face Rockhurst. The battle against Rockhurst was an important one, as Rockhurst was the lone team ahead of UIndy in the preseason conference standings. A win on the road over the Hawks would be a huge boost for the Hounds with the GLVC tournament later this month.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENING
It was a relatively quiet game in the first half, neither team put many shots on target. Rockhurst was the first to test the UIndy defense, but
Miles Palmer made two saves to keep the game scoreless.
Alejandro Steinwascher put a shot on goal but the Hawks goalkeeper. After coming out of half with a 0-0 tie, Rockhurst broke the scoreless tie just three minutes into the second half. Despite being down, UIndy found the equalizer. In the 65th minute,
Javier Steinwascher took a pass from
Josh Mahon and got the header past the Rockhurst goalkeeper to tie the game at one each with 25 minutes to go.
Â
UIndy had a couple of chances to take the lead about 10 minutes after the tied the game,
Josh Mahon and
Ewan Lynch each had their shots saved to keep the game at 1-1. After an extensive lightning delay, UIndy came out and was aggressive and put the pressure on the Rockhurst defense late in the game.
Javier Steinwascher had a chance on a penalty kick to take the lead but missed.
James Jenkins got a shot in the 89th minute and capitalized. Jenkins took a pass from Steinwascher from about 15 yards out and sent it just inside the right post to score the game-winning goal and end the season's hardest road trip with a win.

HOUND BYTES
Head Coach John Higgins on the thrilling game, "fantastic mentality from our guys today. We went down a goal, had a lightning delay, missed a penalty kick on the road, and still managed to get the win. Our mentality out of the lightning delay was perfect and it is all credit to the experience and maturity we have in the group. I cannot say enough good things about the character and culture of this team."
