INDIANAPOLIS – After recently ascending to No. 3 in the conference standings with the conference tournament beginning next week, the UIndy men's soccer team looked to continue build momentum heading into the postseason. The Greyhounds have put together back-to-back wins with dominant defense and taking advantage of opportunities on offense. In one of the most special games of the win, UIndy was able to send their seniors off with a win in their final home game at Key Stadium Sunday afternoon with a win over the Missouri S&T Miners.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Greyhounds took the lead early in this game. UIndy controlled the ball on their side of the field in the game's first five minute, connecting on a goal in the sixth minute.
Javier Steinwascher had a look in the fifth minute to take the early lead, that shot got saved, but his next one did not. Javier took a pass from his brother Alejandro in the box and sent it past the S&T goalkeeper to go up 1-0. UIndy was able to get three more shots on goal in the first half, none of them making it past the Miner defense or keeper so we went to half with the 1-0 Greyhound lead.
Â
In the second half, UIndy controlled the ball on their side of the field for the majority of the half. The Hounds found breakdowns in the Miner coverages to put pressure on the back line and goalkeeper, getting many one-on-one situations with a defender or the goalie himself.
Callum Walsh,
James Jenkins, and
Benjamin Sierra all had quality looks to push the Greyhound lead to 2-0 but the S&T keeper kept making stops to keep his team in the game.
Felix Oevermann was not going to be denied today like he was Friday night. After missing multiple headers Friday night against Drury, Oevermann connected on a header on his senior day in the 76th minute to extend the UIndy lead to 2-0 with the end of the game approaching. In a typical senior day move, coach John Higgins put in the rest of his seniors and pulled the others to get a standing ovation from the crowd at Key Stadium as the Hounds went on to defeat the Miners 2-0.
