14 UIndy Greyhounds (7-1, 6-0) at Truman Bulldogs (6-3, 5-0)
Saturday, Nov. 3, 1 p.m. ET, Kirksville, MO
ON TAP
In their final conference game of the season, the 14th-ranked Greyhounds plays for the 2018 GLVC championship Saturday when they travel to Kirksville, Mo., to face the Truman State University Bulldogs.
FOR ALL THE MARBLES
With both teams undefeated in GLVC play this late in the season, a UIndy win Saturday will secure the school its sixth outright GLVC title in the seven years since the league began sponsoring football. Conversely, a Truman victory would clinch at least a share of the 2018 conference championship*. If Truman does in fact come away with the win, UIndy could still manage a share of the league crown, as the Bulldogs still have one more conference game on the schedule: a potentially-crucial contest at Missouri S&T Nov. 10.
*Truman shared the conference title with Southwest Baptist in 2016 – the only GLVC title the Hounds have yet to miss out on.
ABOUT TRUMAN
After starting the season 0-3, the Bulldogs have made quite the turnaround, winning six straight decisions to put themselves in position for a GLVC title. Truman ranks second in the league in rushing offense at 230.7 yards per game while ranking last in passing offense (127.0 ypg).
Junior quarterback Jaden Barr will present a challenge to the UIndy defense. In addition to being the GLVC's fifth most efficient passer (104.8), the California, Mo., native leads all conference QBs in rushing at 95.4 yards per, a number good for third in the league overall.
Junior defensive end Sam Reeves is tied for the GLVC lead with nine sacks, while freshman kicker Josh Scheiderer tops the conference in points scored (68) and field goals made (14).
HOUNDS vs. BULLDOGS
UIndy has won four of the five meetings with Truman, including a
34-19 win on Homecoming last season. The Hounds fell behind 10-0 early, but UIndy got big plays from
Daveon Bell (86-yard punt return for a touchdown),
Jacob Schmatz (blocked punt) and
Mike Hamilton (two interceptions) to move ahead midway through the second quarter and stay there the rest of the game.
The last time the Greyhounds traveled to Kirksville, however, Truman escaped with a
24-17 win back on Oct. 1, 2016. UIndy set itself up for a potential game-tying score in the final minute with 1st & goal from the four, but the Bulldog defense held, keeping the Hounds out of the end zone for four key snaps.
LAST TIME OUT
UIndy dominated Southwest Baptist in a
48-14 final last Saturday. The Hounds amassed 657 yards of total offense, good for fourth-highest single-game total in GLVC history and most by UIndy since putting up 704 yards in an overtime win versus Michigan Tech on Sept. 20, 2003.
ROOKIE SENSATION
Freshman
Toriano Clinton racked up a team-high 140 rushing yards on just 10 carries at SBU. He also notched three rushing touchdowns for the second consecutive week, becoming the first Greyhound to score at least three rushing TDs in back-to-back games since
Andrew Walker in October of 2015.
Clinton is also tied for the DII lead with three kickoff return touchdowns. Last week, he became the first football student-athlete to win two GLVC weekly honors on the same day, as he garnered both Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week accolades from the league on Oct. 22.
ONE-TWO PUNCH
The Greyhound offense sports two of the GLVC's top four rushers. Clinton's recent surge has vaulted him into fourth place at 78.1 yards per game, while sophomore
Al McKeller still leads the league at 101.8 yards per. Furthermore, the two rank first (McKeller, 9) and second (Clinton, 8) in the GLVC in rushing TDs, respectively.
SUPER REGION CONCERNS
The top seven teams in the latest
NCAA DII Super Region Three rankings stayed put this week, with UIndy remaining at No. 5. The only movement came at the bottom of the top 10, as Pittsburg State (8) swapped spots with Harding (9) and Missouri S&T bumped Saginaw Valley out of the No. 10 slot. S&T's appearance marks the first time a GLVC team not named UIndy cracked the regional rankings since Southwest Baptist earned the No. 3 seed in the 2016 SR4 playoff bracket.
This season, the top seven teams from the country's four regions will earn berths in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. The No. 1 seed in each region will earn a bye, while seeds 2-4 will host seeds 5-7 in first-round action Nov. 17. The bracket plays out on consecutive Saturdays until a champion is crowned Dec. 15.
TOP DOG
Senior QB
Jake Purichia tops all active Division II football players in career passing efficiency. Also UIndy's career leader in the stat, Purichia has compiled a 165.86 passing efficiency rating in his four years on campus. The second-highest career mark in the region belongs to Grand Valley State's Bart Williams (157.98, 6th in DII), while the second-highest in the GLVC goes to McKendree's Reece Metcalf (152.73, 9th in DII).
NO PASSING ZONE
The Greyhounds are currently third in the nation in passing yards allowed (134.5). The low figure comes despite that fact that UIndy has scored first in seven of eight games to date and led the vast majority of total game time this season. The Hounds have finished highly in the statistic a number of times under Coach Bart, including a three-year span of ranking third, second and third in DII in passing yards from 2012-14.
MORE LOFTY RANKS
UIndy also ranks in the top 10 in Division II in a number of other categories, including kickoff returns (1st, 32.4 ypr), fewest sacks allowed (4th, 0.50 spg), third-down conversion percentage (6th, .506), fewest passes intercepted (6th, 3) and passing completion percentage (8th, .647).
