DAYTON, Ohio - Â In their final exhibition before starting off the regular season next weekend in Michigan, the UIndy women's basketball team head just over 100 miles east on I-70 to take on the defending Atlantic 10 champion Dayton Flyers. The Hounds, already having played Vanderbilt less than five days ago, were looking to use their final exhibition against a D-I school to get some valuable experience with the regular season looming.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Â
The Greyhounds came out aggressive early on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Not letting the Flyers get any looks at second chance points or use their size to their advantage. UIndy jumped out to a quick 12-7 lead before forcing Dayton to call a quick timeout. Dayton came out of the timeout with almost a whole new lineup to switch up the game on the visiting Hounds. The Hounds stayed aggressive without getting themselves into foul trouble, not letting the Flyers to get to the free throw line to get any free chances. At the end of one the Hounds trailed by a single point after shooting over 53% from the field.
Â
The UIndy offense came out in the second quarter to an aggressive Flyer defense. The Flyers forced a couple of Greyhound turnovers early and pushed their lead to 10 before a UIndy timeout. UIndy overcame their turnovers woes, being cautious with the basketball after Coach Wodrich burnt her first timeout. UIndy only turned the ball over a couple times rest of the quarter but ending up forcing four Flyers turnovers. After shooting over 50% in the first half, the Hounds came out in the second half, only attempting 10 field goals to the Flyers 16, making two of their ten while Dayton shot over 37% to increase their lead to 13 heading into the break.
Â
UIndy hung around with the Flyers offense in the 3rd quarter. The Hounds jumped out to a quick 3-0 run in the beginning of the third quarter courtesy of
Taylor Drury. The Flyers came right back and the two squads went back and forth from there. The Flyers got the advantage in the quarter shooting almost 44% from the field compared to the Hounds shooting around 31%. The Flyers used a 7-0 run in the span of just over two minutes of play to put their lead after the end of the third quarter to 37-55 heading into the final quarter.
Â
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, UIndy showed the Flyers and the crowd in Dayton Arena that they were not going to quit. Freshman
Katie Sowa had two three pointers fall on back-to-back possessions, junior
Emma Benoit pulled in an offensive rebound and put the ball back up right away for a quick two to pull the Hounds within 10. Dayton quickly called a timeout after the Hounds eight points in three possessions to begin the quarter. The Flyers used the timeout to their advantage, getting 10 points back on the Hounds on the heels of a 10-0 run. UIndy did not let the run get to them, only allowing two points rest of the quarter. After the 10-0 Dayton run, UIndy finished out the quarter outscoring the Flyers 11-2, falling to the defending A-10 champions 67-56
