HILLSDALE, Mich. – The UIndy cross country teams wrapped up competition at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Saturday morning, with the women's squad earning its best finish under head coach Brad Robinson and highest mark since 2015.
The men placed 12th as a team, their best finish since 2014.
"Both teams ran great today," Robinson said after the meet. "They stayed disciplined during the second half of the race as they kept moving up."
Mickayla Wenzel (12th) and
Lauren Bailey (17th) each earned all-region honors on Saturday with their top-25 finish. As a senior, Wenzel recorded a new personal record (PR), while Bailey improved on her 88th mark as a freshman.
"Mickayla had the best race of her life today," Robinson said of the senior. "She led the ladies to their best finish in the past decade."
Melissa Spencer finished the 6k race in 23:27 for a 56th-place finish, while
Briana Leonard and
Madison Vauters crossed the finish line consecutively in the top 64 runners.
On the men's side,
Chris Switzer finished just outside all-region consideration in 26th with a time of 32:39.2 in the 10k. The freshman has ended an impressive first season after placing fourth in the GLVC meet two weeks ago.
Kieffer Vittetow (51st) and
Taylor Kleyn (63rd) joined their teammate in the top 63, crossing the line within 11 seconds of each other. Last season, Vittetow finished 87th as a rookie and improved his time by 24 seconds at the regional.
Robinson concluded: "I am incredibly proud of both teams. The team unity and camaraderie has reached a new high for our program."
Grand Valley State claimed both titles on Saturday. The Greyhound women were the first among GLVC schools to finish at the meet, while the men were third in the conference.
