QUINCY, Ill. – After suffering back-to-back losses for the first time in a month, the UIndy volleyball team (19-11, 12-6) closed out regular season action on Saturday with a sweep of Quincy (12-19, 2-16 GLVC).
The Greyhounds are now 8-3 this season after a loss.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hounds roared out to a commanding 14-2 lead in the opening set in part from three service aces, including two from
Jena Davis. The Hawks fought back, but
Katie Furlong capped a four-of-five run with a pair of kills to seal it.
Â
UIndy controlled the second set, leading 14-6 midway through the frame. Kills from
Taylor Jacquay,
Lauren Koopman, and Furlong officially put the game out of reach for Quincy, as the host Hawks would trail 2-0 heading into the third.
Â
Jacquay's third service ace of the match, and the team's ninth, made the score 18-15 in the third set before Quincy knotted it with three straight points of its own. After three straight attacking errors by the Hawks, Jacquay finished the sweep off with her sixth kill of the afternoon.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Hounds' nine service aces ties a season-best mark that was last reached on September 1 in the team's win over No. 17 Colorado School of Mines at the UIndy Invite. Saturday's contest was just the second time this season the Greyhounds have not recorded more service errors than aces, as the first instance occurred last weekend at McKendree.
Â
Needing 27 kills to top the program record book in kills by a sophomore, Furlong knocked down 12 balls against the Hawks, finishing the regular season with 29 double-digit performances. The Galena, Ill. native is now just 11 kills shy of 500 for the season and has hit .241 through 111 sets.
Â
With another 35 assists on Saturday, setter
Alyssa Spears closes out the regular season as the GLVC leader with 11.63 dimes/set in conference play. The setter also picked up six digs in the win, while tallying one service ace.
Â
UIndy played strong defensively, scooping up 50 digs to Quincy's 47. Senior middle
Katie Voelz recorded two of the Hounds' solo blocks, while also earning three aces. Sophomore libero
Olivia Martin had a match-high 17 digs, while Davis scooped up 12.
HOUND BYTES
Head coach
Jason Reed: "We're happy to get things turned around before next week. We really controlled the entire match and stayed composed throughout even as it got tight in the third set. We will get back to work Monday and have a great week of practice before Thursday. We still have some things to earn and prove to ourselves."
Â
UP NEXT
The Greyhounds conclude the regular season fifth in the conference and will likely battle Rockhurst in the first round of the GLVC Championship Tournament this Thursday in East Peoria, Ill. Later tonight, the GLVC will officially announce the tournament seeds and matchups.
