INDIANAPOLIS – In a battle of GLVC Tournament hopefuls, the UIndy women's basketball team (7-15, 4-8 GLVC) came up on a the short end of a 63-53 final score versus visiting McKendree (9-9, 5-6) Thursday night. Senior
Martha Burse provided the biggest highlight for the Hounds, as the Kanakee, Ill., native became just the 24th player in program history to score 1,000 career points in a Greyhound uniform.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Burse was once again the driving force for the Hounds, pouring in 31 points while adding seven rebounds and three steals, but it was the visiting Bearcats that came away with the victory. After a 26-26 tie at the half, McKendree managed an 11-0 spurt early in the third quarter that the Hounds would ultimately not overcome.
Â
Burse scored 23 of her points in the second half, as she picked two fouls in the game's first six minutes, forcing her to the bench for much of the first half.Â
Â
UIndy and McKendree came into the night ranked eighth and ninth, respectively, in the GLVC standings. Eight teams will qualify for the upcoming conference tournament next month.
Â
Additionally, the Greyhound student-athletes and coaching staff donned special red t-shirts as part of the red-out promotion to commemorate "Caden's Night." Caden, the nephew of Head Coach
Kristin Wodrich, is a Riley Children's Hospital patient. Red bracelets were sold and donations were accepted, with all proceeds going to Riley.
