Greyhounds suffer season-opening loss on walk-off homer

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Deuces were wild on Friday afternoon on the campus of Western Kentucky University. Unfortunately for the UIndy baseball team (0-1), the last run scored came via a walk-off homer by in-region rival, Kentucky Wesleyan (2-1).

The Hounds and Panthers each scored a pair of runs twice in nine innings before KWC's Andrew Kirkland drilled a home run to left field to lead off the bottom of the 10th inning.

Jake Sprinkle struck out four batters over seven innings, allowing four earned runs on the day. Dylan Jones drove in a pair, while Holdsworth and Joop also tallied an RBI.

The scoring began in the bottom of the second when the Panthers rattled off three straight singles, followed by a wild pitch and sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead. It took 10 Greyhound hitters to record their first hit of the day, but Jones smacked a double in the top of the fourth to drive in Blake Richardson and Holdsworth to even the game.

Joop and Holdsworth brought home another two runs for the Greyhounds in the fifth inning, but the Panthers rallied to tie it at four apiece with three straight two-out hits.

Michael Schalasky took the bump in the eighth inning for UIndy and promptly shut down six of the first KWC hitters to face the righty. Kirkland ended the game as the first hitter in the bottom of the first extra frame, hitting the junior with the loss on opening day.

Holdsworth finished the game two for five with a pair of knocks, while the team totaled just six. The junior shortstop also drew the lone free pass of the day for the Greyhounds. Sprinkle allowed nine hits and walked one in his seven innings of work, sending down the Panthers in order three times.

UIndy and Kentucky Wesleyan will take Saturday off due to weather and play a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Nick Denes Field.
