LIBERTY, Mo. – The UIndy women's basketball team (8-18, 5-11 GLVC) trimmed an 18-point fourth-quarter deficit all the way down to two but could not complete the comeback in a 74-66 final at William Jewell College Saturday. Senior
Martha Burse and freshman
Taylor Drury combined for 45 points on the afternoon, including a collective 20 points in the fourth quarter.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hounds led by as much as five points in the early going, but the second quarter proved to be a struggle. UIndy managed just five points on 2 for 9 shooting (.222) in the entire period, as the host Cardinals hit a buzzer-beating three to take a 31-20 lead at the half.
Â
Trailing by 18 early in the fourth quarter, the Greyhounds orchestrated a furious comeback. Fueled by Burse and Drury, UIndy outscored the Cardinals 19-3 over the next four-plus minutes. Burse scored eight consecutive points in one stretch, while Drury matched that feat to close out the run.
Â
As a result, UIndy climbed back to within two points with five minutes to go, but Jewell would not relinquish the lead. Freshman Katie Butaud knocked down a three to quell the Greyhound momentum, while the Cardinals combined to hit 6 of 8 free throws down the stretch to stay in front.
Â
Drury hit five 3-pointers on the way to a career-high 25 points while coming one rebound shy of her second collegiate double-double. Burse racked up 20 points, five rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- UIndy out-shot the Cardinals 43 percent to 41 percent from the field, but Jewell was awarded 11 more free throw attempts than the Hounds.

Erin Wood finished with eight points and eight boards.
- Saturday marked the seventh game this season that Burse recorded at least five steals. She needs seven more steals to hit 99 for the year and break the UIndy single-season record.
