KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 20 UIndy softball team (34-12, 16-6 GLVC) salvaged a split at Rockhurst (18-25, 12-10) Saturday, winning game two of the doubleheader in extra innings. After dropping game one 3-2, junior
Taylor Podschweit broke an eighth-inning tie in the capper with a two-run triple in what finished as a 7-5 final.
GAME 1 | Rockhurst 3, UIndy 2
After the Hounds tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth on a sac fly from Podschweit, Rockhurst was able to push across the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth. The Hawks managed only one hit in the frame, but a free pass and two fielding errors worked against the Greyhounds in what proved to be the game-winning inning for the home team.
Brooke Montgomery and
Jessie Noone accounted for the two UIndy runs. Freshman
Taylor Danielson went 2 for 3 with a pair of singles.
Starting pitcher
Lauren Honkomp (13-6) went the distance but took the loss. She struck out five and walked four, with all three runs allowed classified as unearned.
GAME 2 | UIndy 7, Rockhurst 5 (8 inn.)
With the score knotted at 5-5, senior
Julia Liceaga led off the eighth with a knock while Montgomery later slapped an infield single to third to extend the rally. Podschweit came to the plate with two on and two out before falling behind 0-2 in the count. The Aurora, Ill., native delivered in the clutch, however, shooting the ball down the right field line and clearing the bases with her team-high fifth triple of the year.
Podschweit's late heroics netted her fourth and fifth RBIs of the game. The career-high total marked the first five-ribbie performance for a Greyhound this season. She also plated go-ahead runs in the fourth with a two-run single, as well as one another score on a third-inning double.
Honkomp (14-6) returned to the circle in game two, this time in relief. She entered a tie game with runners on first and third and two outs in the sixth and proceeded to retire each of the seven Hawks hitters she faced, ultimately earning the win.
Both Montgomery and Noone added a hit and two runs, while Danielson finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and a stolen base.
