Baseball drops doubleheader at Illinois Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The UIndy baseball team (17-10, 3-7 GLVC) ran into a red-hot Illinois Springfield (24-4, 5-0 GLVC) team on Saturday afternoon, dropping both games the series-opening doubleheader to the No. 10 Prairie Stars. The Hounds led 4-0 early in the first game before the Prairie Star offense put a few crooked numbers on the scoreboard to run away with the win. Illinois Springfield handled UIndy in the nightcap, running away with the 9-0 victory.

Storm Joop and Macy Holdsworth led off the game reaching  base, before coming around to score on a double by Dylan Jones, who continued to rake on Saturday. Nick Miller and Hunter Waning each drove in a run in the third inning to increase the Greyhound lead to 4-0 early on.

Jake Sprinkle faced one over the minimum through three innings, striking out four and inducing one double play. Illinois Springfield tied the game in the fourth with four runs, which began with a lead-off triple, bean ball, and three-run homer. The Prairie Stars scored five more runs over the next two innings to lead 9-4, chasing Sprinkle from the mound.

Jones scored on a grounder by Tyler Phillips in the seventh, but the Prairie Stars scored two more in the eighth and sealed the 11-5 victory.
