Hounds sweep rare Monday twin bill

DES PLAINES, Ill. – In a doubleheader originally scheduled for Sunday, the No. 11 UIndy softball team (28-8, 12-4 GLVC) earned a pair of wins versus Lewis University (16-20, 5-13) Monday afternoon. The Greyhounds dispatched of the host Flyers by scores of 4-1 and 2-0, with both games being played in "The Dome at the Ballpark" in Des Plaines, Ill., some 30 miles from the Lewis campus.

GAME 1 | UIndy 4, Lewis 1
A three-run second inning proved all the offense the Hounds would need. Back-to-back one-out walks set the table for Cathy Skaggs, who roped a triple to right field. She touched home a batter later on Julia Liceaga's single.

The Flyers managed a lone run in the bottom of the third but no more. Starter Lauren Honkomp (10-4) picked up her 10th win of the season, scattering nine hits over 5 1/3 innings. Freshman Halie Waters finished the game, earning her third save with 1 2/3 perfect frames.

Senior Jessie Noone added a solo home run in the seventh, marking her fourth extra-base hit in the last three games.

GAME 2 | UIndy 2, Lewis 0
Freshman Haylie Foster entered the circle in the capper and had perhaps her best outing as a collegian. The Plainfield, Ind., native spun a two-hit shutout, striking out three and walking none. She retired the side in order in five of the first six innings, with a two-out double in the seventh marking the only base runner to safely touch second.

Foster also contributed at the dish, driving in Shannon Schuetz with the first run of the game on a fourth-inning double. Skaggs immediately followed with an RBI single to cap the scoring.

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds have a quick turnaround as they are set to travel to Columbus, Ohio Wednesday for a doubleheader at in-region Ohio Dominican. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
