OZARK, Mo. – The UIndy baseball team (30-21) continued its successful run through the 2018 GLVC Championship Tournament Friday with a 7-4 win against the Maryville Saints (28-24). The Greyhounds used a six-run fifth inning to earn the lead before holding on for the victory.
Â
In addition to locking up the 16th 30-win season at UIndy for Head Coach
Gary Vaught, the result ensures that the Hounds will be one of only two teams to start play Saturday without a loss. They will face an opponent yet to be determined on at 5 p.m. ET tomorrow. The eight-team, double-elimination event is being held at US Baseball Park in Ozark, Mo.
Â
A day after taking down the West Division's regular season champ in Drury, UIndy defeated the West's three-seed on the strength of a big fifth inning that saw the Hounds send 10 hitters to the plate.
Kyle Orloff (double) and
Joe Kenney (single) each had two RBIs to help fuel the rally, turning a 3-1 deficit into a 7-3 lead.
Â
Meanwhile, UIndy got some solid pitching from four different arms. Junior
Michael Schalasky got the start and gave the Hounds four-plus innings before handing it to the bullpen.
Freshman
Jon Crawford, sophomore
Reid Werner and senior
Dylan Stutsman combined for five innings of one-run ball, with Werner (3-4) earning the relief win.
Â
Other standouts included leadoff-man
Storm Joop, who had two runs and three walks, and shortstop
Macy Holdsworth, who finished 2 for 3 with a ribbie.
