Double OT not enough for Hounds and McKendree

INDIANAPOLIS – Coming off their first loss of the season Friday night against Illinois-Springfield, the UIndy men's soccer team looked at Sunday's game as a game that could get them feeling confident heading into the middle of the GLVC season. The McKendree Bearcats came to the campus of UIndy fresh off a win Friday night and looking to take down the nationally-ranked Hounds. The Greyhounds were not going to get caught up in Friday night's results on Sunday afternoon though.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Like they have all season, UIndy came out aggressive on both ends. The UIndy defense came out swarming the Bearcats offense, only allowing one shot in the first half, coming off an attempt sailing high in just the sixth-minute of the game. While not allowing a shot on goal in the first half, UIndy got three shots on target, just none of them finding the back of the net. McKendree was able to double their shot total in the second half from the first half, firing off a pair of shots, but none of them making it past the UIndy defense. UIndy had a chance late to score the game-winning goal, Benjamin Sierra had the Bearcat defense beat but sent his shot just right of the goal, sending the game to overtime.

The UIndy defense stood tall in the extra period, McKendree did not even get off a single shot attempt while the Hounds had a pair of chances to end the game. Sierra had a header saved by the McKendree goal keeper and Felix Overmann sent a header wide right to keep the score tied at 0. Much like the overtime period, McKendree did not get a shot off against the Greyhound defense in the second overtime period, unfortunately for UIndy they did not get fire off a shot against the McKendree defense either. The horn sounded, and the game ended at a 0-0 draw.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-For the first time since 2016 against William Jewell, the Hounds allowed 0 shots on goal for an entire match.
-Today's 0-0 double OT draw was the first since 2016 against Wisconsin-Parkside.
-Defense wins championships. UIndy has only allowed two goals through eight games this season, their lowest mark through eight games since at least 2006.

HOUND BYTES
Head coach John Higgins on Sunday's draw and the team's weekend as a whole, "I am really happy with the response today given the result on Friday. Looking at it all, it is a very good overall start to the season. We had an opponent come in and we held them to zero shots on goal, over the course of the weekend we have only given up one shot on target. Unfortunately, we have lost a game and we have tied a game and that has been the difference this weekend from previous weekends. We have to learn to be sharper in the final third and when that comes we are going to be a really good team."

UP NEXT
The Hounds are back on the road this week, they invade Romeoville, Illinois, on Friday this week when they take on the Lewis Flyers at 5 pm.
