INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy volleyball team (6-3, 1-0 GLVC) jumped out to a 2-0 advantage over the visiting Quincy Hawks on Friday night in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center, but needed five sets to take down the conference foe.
The Greyhounds hit .450 as a team in the final frame to move past the Hawks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hounds and Hawks hung with each other the entire first set before UIndy pulled away in the end. Quincy led 24-22 on the edge of the first-set win, but middle blockers
Emily Ellis and
Katie Voelz evened the score before
Katie Furlong earned three of the next four points.
After the Hounds used an early 5-1 advantage to eventually win 25-21 in the second set, the Hawks bounced back in the next two games. Libero
Olivia Martin posted 15 of her 38 digs in sets three and four.
Despite riding against the momentum Quincy picked up, UIndy came out firing in the fifth set.
Julia Kruzan recorded three kills on 1.000 hitting, while Furlong chipped in four kills herself.
Taylor Jacquay had three kills on a .600 attack clip.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Katie Voelz totaled 11 kills on the night, while hitting .444 on 18 attempts. It is the senior's second time this season already with double-digit kills on at least .400 hitting after posting the numbers on just two such occasions last year.
Once again,
Katie Furlong led the Hounds with 25 kills, her fourth time this season with at least 20 successful attacks. The sophomore continues to impress on both sides of the ball, as well, with 16 digs against Quincy on Friday night.
Julia Kruzan (17) and
Taylor Jacquay (16) combined for 33 kills on .239 hitting. It is the sixth time this season Kruzan has reached double figures, while Jacquay has posted at least 10 kills on seven occasions, including seven of the last eight matches.
Olivia Martin was two digs away from tying the program record for most in a five-setter with 38 scoops. Kristin Lay picked up 40 digs on October 25, 2003 at Missouri-St. Louis.
Junior setter
Alyssa Spears has now shattered her previous career-high assist record – for the third time this season – after dishing out 67 in the win over Quincy. Spears also picked up 17 digs, the fourth time in 2018 she has totaled double figures.
HOUND BYTES
Head coach
Jason Reed: "I'm continually impressed with this team on how they keep fighting through adversity. We made some mistakes, but it was hard to tell tonight whether we were winning or losing at times because we stayed upbeat and fought."
"This season we introduced a new system and we're still fighting to get better at it, and you can really see it paying off more and more each match. It's fun to see these girls eager to learn and execute in order for us to get better every day."
"Alyssa moved the ball around well tonight, doing a good job of finding who had the best chance to get us the point."
