INDIANAPOLIS – It was yet another grind-it-out five-set victory for the UIndy volleyball team (7-3, 2-0 GLVC) on Saturday afternoon, as the Greyhounds won the final two frames to edge the Bulldogs and begin conference season 2-0 for the first time since 2015.
The win comes a week after the Greyhounds defeated No. 17 Mines at the UIndy Invitational. Truman was receiving votes in the AVCA national poll that was released this past Monday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams were tied 10 times and traded leads on seven occasions in the opening set before the Hounds pulled away at the end. Truman committed eight attacking errors and UIndy took advantage, earning 14 kills itself as
Katie Furlong bookended the set-one win with terminations.
After jumping out to an 8-0 advantage in the second set, Truman held serve with UIndy and won, 25-17. The third frame was more competitive, as the Hounds led 11-9 early. The Bulldogs then went on a 6-0 run, which proved to be the difference.
The middles came alive in the fourth, as
Emily Ellis and
Katie Voelz combined for eight kills on .583 hitting. Ellis tallied a solo block in the set, while Voelz shared a stop with
Julia Kruzan late to pull the Hounds away with the win. Unlike their previous two fifth sets with offensive destruction, the Hounds strong-armed the Bulldogs defensively, scooping up 13 digs as a team. Truman hit -.040 as a team in the deciding set.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Emily Ellis has now recorded at least eight kills in the past three matches, including 10 against Mines and Truman. The junior transfer attacked at a .444 clip on Saturday, the highest percent she has hit with success since .462 at Coker. Ellis has now hit .286 or higher in four matches as a Hound.
Taylor Jacquay earned 14 kills against Truman for her third straight contest with double-digit terminations. The sophomore is now averaging 2.98 kills/set, which ranks second on the team.
Katie Furlong led the team with 17 kills and picked up 11 digs in the win, her fifth double-double of the season and second in a row.
Alyssa Spears dished out another 49 assists on Saturday, and is now seven away from matching her 2017 total with the Hounds.
UIndy has begun the 2018 campaign 7-3, the program's best start since 2012. That season the Greyhounds started 17-3 and advanced to the Elite Eight.
HOUND BYTES
Junior
Emily Ellis on the comeback win: "The biggest thing with us is that we have to know we're going to win. When we came back in the fourth set, we knew that this was our house and there's not anything to worry about."
Ellis on finding success recently: "With being new here, it was about finding that connection. I really began focusing on doing the best I can every time I touch the ball and just try to get better."
Sophomore
Taylor Jacquay on grinding out the victory: "We know what we're worth. The second and third sets, we lost focus on who we are and how we play; we lost our energy. In the fourth set, we knew we had to pick it up and we did."
Jacquay on head coach
Jason Reed saying how she brings more to the team than just the numbers: "Jason loves to gas me up. I feel that my role isn't always to get the kills; it's about keeping the team together."
