Record-setting performances highlight Hathaway Distance Classic

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy track & field teams hosted another meet this weekend – the Tom Hathaway Distance Classic – and once again multiple school records fell, as three women's marks were rewritten. The two-day event, held Friday and Saturday at the Athletics and Recreation Center on the UIndy campus, featured record-setting wins for the Greyhounds in the pole vault, shot put and the distance medley relay.

Currently the most fluid mark in the UIndy record books, the women's pole vault mark was reset for the third consecutive meet. Teammates Kylie Falcone and Brittney Clark have been trading the record back and forth this season, and it was Clark's 3.76-meter vault that upped both the UIndy program mark and Clark's NCAA provisional mark. Fellow-Greyhounds Mary Costello and Lauren Joseph finished second and third, respectively.

Senior Katie Monk took a brief break in rewriting the school's weight throw record (she had surpassed it each of the last two meets) and instead snapped her own shot put record. Her toss of 15.59 meters also matched the NCAA automatic qualifying standard.

Finally, the women's distance medley relay team made history with a winning time of 12:14.80. Mickayla Wenzel, Mary Watts, Yailene Leon and Lauren Bailey combined efforts to best the previous school record by nearly 10 seconds.

The UIndy women's distance runner put up additional standout performances, with Wenzel (mile, 5:01.56, 2nd), Bailey (mile, 5:02.04, 3rd) and freshman Hanna Stamm (5000m, 19:19.13, 1st) all setting PRs.

Watts (400), Keri Ertel (60m hurdles) and Monk (weight throw) each earned runner-up finishes, as did the women's 4x400 meter relay team. Watts added a third-place showing in the 200-meter dash, while junior Deju Miller also placed third in the high jump (1.63m).

On the men's side, the Hounds amassed three event wins. Senior Austin Hogan continued his strong performances in the throwing ring, winning the shot put with a toss of 17.32 meters; senior DeAndre Bluitt took the high jump with his first two-meter leap of the season (2.01m) and senior Trace Oswalt racked up a season-high 4537 points in the heptathlon.

Hogan also finished runner-up in the weight throw with a mark of 19.72 meters, second only to his coach and former UIndy All-American Matt Royer (20.75m). Sophomore Keeton Adams took fourth in the weight, breaking off a career-best 16.66-meter heave.

Other notable performances included runner-up showings for Brady Walden (long jump), Reo Ogundare (pole vault), Dallas Ford (60m hurdles) and the men's distance medley relay team. Ford's time of 8.38 seconds was good for a personal record, topping three other Greyhounds in the finals.

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds take a break from hosting when they travel to a pair of meets next weekend: the Hillsdale Wide Track Classic on Friday, Feb. 1, and the Indiana Wesleyan Midwest Classic the next day.
