Hounds fall in overtime to Quincy in GLVC home opener

INDIANAPOLIS – As the calendar flipped to 2019, the UIndy women's basketball team's schedule flipped to conference play this week. The Hounds hosted Quincy University in Nicoson Hall Thursday night in their GLVC home opener. In a game that was fast, physical, and tightly contested for the whole 40 minutes, UIndy fell to Quincy in overtime, 67-59.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Head coach Kristin Wodrich trotted out three freshmen to start the game, Taylor Dillard made her second start in the last three games while Katie Sowa and Liz Alsot each made their first career start. The three freshmen and two junior lineup presented a tough-nosed defensive lineup for the Hounds, but substitutions were made at the media timeout and Taylor Drury, Emma Benoit, and Mickey Sasson brought some offensive firepower to the lineup as the Hounds closed out the first quarter strong to tie the game. UIndy kept up the momentum in the second quarter, Drury and Dillard scored a quick five points for UIndy to force a Quincy timeout just minutes into the period. UIndy went to work on the inside, getting layups against the Hawks interior and drawing fouls, scoring 14 points in the period and holding Quincy to just eight. UIndy took a 28-22 lead into the break despite shooting just over 30% from the field, but getting to the line 14 times and making 10 of their attempts.

UIndy came out of the break on a quick 6-0 run before forcing another Hawks timeout. Laura Thomas scored another layup right out of the timeout to push the Greyhound lead to 12. Every time the Hawks would start to claw back, the Hounds would keep fighting and pushing the lead back near double-digits. After a Quincy three, UIndy took an eight-point lead into the final frame. Quincy fought back and tied the game, had the ball with one second left under the basket, but missed the three and we went to overtime. Benoit started the overtime off strong for the Hounds with a quick layup, UIndy failed to muster a run after that until another Benoit layup with just under two minutes to go. Quincy rattled off three buckets and held UIndy scoreless in the final minute and a half to seal the 67-59 win.
