Jones, Santana Carry Greyhounds to Victory

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team (11-12, 3-5 GLVC) wreaked havoc on Friday evening at the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center, but it was the UIndy Greyhounds (15-6, 6-2 GLVC) that prevailed in the five-set thriller to get back in the win column.

Rookies Emma Jones (19 kills on .615 hitting) and Gillian Santana (25 digs) carried the Greyhounds in the win, while Taylor Jacquay (13 kills, 10 digs) posted her sixth double-double of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Greyhounds came out firing in the opening frame, attacking at a .438 clip to easily take the first set. Jones led the way with five kills, while Katie Furlong joined Jacquay with three putaways.

The next two sets were all Screaming Eagles. The visiting defense limited the UIndy attack to -.200 hitting in the second to cruise to the 25-16 victory before fending off a late Greyhound run in the third to take the one-set advantage. Santana recorded a massive 12 digs in the third frame.

Jones was back at in the fourth, scoring six kills on seven attempts to give the Greyhounds life heading into the deciding frame. Circle hit the square in the fifth game, as Furlong, Jacquay and Jones combined to hit .444 on the team's way to its third straight five-set win at home.

The Greyhounds attacked at a .340 clip the final two sets to complete the comeback.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-For what Elizabeth Eads lacked on the attack, the freshman made up for with four service aces and four blocks against Southern Indiana
-Jones has now recorded 19 kills in two of the past three matches
-Santana tallied a season-best 25 digs on Friday, far surpassing her previous best of 18, which last came against Quincy on October 5
-Jacquay and MaKenna Barnhart recorded the other three service aces on the night

HOUND BYTES
Santana: "I thought that I did what I needed to. There were some moments I didn't do my job, but for the most part I was where I needed to be. We came together in the fourth set and changed the things we could control."

Jones: "I stay constant and excited when the team gets down, and always give my all and I've been feeling really good the last couple weeks. I think we realized we just needed to play. We were in our heads, and when we got near the end we turned it around and came out with a win."

MORE NOTES
Friday's win marks the fourth straight Greyhound victory over Southern Indiana … Screaming Eagle rookie outside Leah Anderson tallied 17 kills on .286 hitting … senior Julia Kruzan appeared in her first match since September 7, successfully killing two balls on as many attempts in her lone set … UIndy recorded more service aces than errors for the first time since October 12 against Illinois Springfield.
