Baseball earns series sweep on opening weekend

WESTFIELD, Ind. – The UIndy baseball team (3-0) won both ends of a doubleheader versus Parkside Saturday, capping an undefeated weekend for the Greyhounds. UIndy topped the Rangers (0-3) by scores 6-4 and 10-0 in a twin bill at Grand Park in nearby Westfield, Ind.

UIndy 6, Parkside 4
Trailing 2-1, the Hounds surged ahead in the bottom fifth. With two and the bases clear, Macy Holdsworth extended the inning with a clean single to left. The base knock ignited what proved to be the game-deciding rally, as three more singles and three walks followed. Sophomore John Carpinelli delivered a two-run single in the frame, while senior Joe Kenney coaxed a bases-loaded walk.

Holdsworth later earned an RBI in the sixth to tack on an insurance run.

UIndy starter Reid Werner pitched four strong innings before getting into trouble in the fifth. He finished the game with nine strikeouts and two runs allowed in 4 2/3 innings. Freshman Johnny Irish (1-0) came on to pick up his first collegiate win with 2 1/3 innings of work, while junior-transfer David Corbin tossed the final two frames to earn the save.

UIndy 10, Parkside 0 (8 inn.)
The Hounds rule-ruled the Rangers in game two after setting the tone with a early power display in the bottom of the first. Hunter Waning got the scoring started with two-run blast to left center, good for the Hounds' first home run of the season. Senior Tyler Phillips followed with a two-run bomb of his own, pulling a waist-high offering over the left field fence.

The Greyhounds piled on with three runs in the second and another in the third. The second inning featured four extra-base hits, including triples from both Waning and Kyle Orloff and doubles from Ryan Simons and Jake Perreira.

Sophomore Bailey Buescher got the start on the mound, facing one over the minimum in four innings. Parker Nolan (1-0) got the win after fanning three in two scoreless innings.
