Hounds second half comeback falls short at USI

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – After falling to the Bellarmine Knights Thursday night, the UIndy women's basketball team got their second shot at the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles Saturday afternoon in Evansville. The Screaming Eagles fell Thursday night to Lewis and rebounded today by defeating the Hounds, 80-73.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first quarter was tightly contested with the lead changing hands several times. The Screaming Eagles were able to start to pull away in the final minute and a half, scoring the final six points of the quarter to lead by nine going into the second period. The first quarter saw both teams shoot over 50% from the field including USI over 70%, the second quarter was completely different for both teams. USI was held to 40% shooting in the second frame while UIndy only shot 26% from the field but USI took a 12-point lead into the break.

The third quarter saw UIndy have success from the field similar to what USI had in the first quarter as the Greyhounds shot over 63% from the field in the period. Taylor Drury and Laura Thomas ignited the UIndy offense in the second half as Drury hit a pair of three's top start the half while Thomas scored seven points of her own to chip away at the USI lead. UIndy got to the line in the third quarter, making six of their nine attempts and eventually taking back the lead they once held in the first quarter. USI took back the lead in the final minute to go up three heading into the final quarter. The Screaming Eagles started the fourth quarter on a tear, scoring the first seven points of the period forcing a UIndy timeout. The Greyhounds had some chances down the stretch but USI was able to convert some jumpers late to hold off the Hounds, winning by seven.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-Katie Sowa knocked down three triples on the afternoon, coming off the bench for 14 points. Sowa's 14 points and four three-point treys are her most since Bellarmine two weeks ago when she sunk five three's for 15 points. It is the fourth time during conference play she's made four or more deep balls.
-The Greyhounds shot 61.1% from beyond the arc. The 61.1% clip is their second-highest percentage of the season from deep, second to only the 75% they shot from deep against Tiffin.
-The Screaming Eagles and Greyhounds each shot 18 free throws today with the Hounds making 12 and USI making 13. It is the first time this season that the Hounds and their opponent have had the same amount of free throws.
