Honkomp Blanks Panthers to Cap Rare Monday Twin Bill

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The No. 20 UIndy softball team (27-9, 8-4 GLVC) traded punches with host Drury University (24-9, 7-3) Monday afternoon, enduring a 10-1 loss in the opener before earning a 5-0 shutout win behind a complete-game effort rom junior Lauren Honkomp in game two. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday but was pushed back due to weather.

Drury 10, #20 UIndy 1 (5 inn.)
The Panthers did the majority of their damage in a nine-run second inning. Five of the runs came around on hits from Serenity Healy (double) and Kinzy Mathis (home run), though five walks and an error helped fuel the rally.

Starting pitcher Halie Waters (13-5) shouldered the loss after failing to get an out in the second inning. Freshman Amy Kaniewski recorded the final nine outs, allowing one run and striking out three.

Kamrie Foster came around on a sac fly from Gianni Iannantone in the third inning for UIndy's only run. No Greyhound hitter managed more than one hit.

#20 UIndy 5, Missouri S&T 0
Honkomp (12-3) ensured a quick bounce back for the Hounds. An all-conference and all-region performer a year ago, the veteran hurler smothered the Panther bats with a three-hit shutout, with all three hits being singles. She fanned a season-high 10 batters and allowed only one base runner as far as third base.

Both pitchers were dealing early, but the Greyhounds broke the scoreless tie with a big sixth inning. Senior Taylor Podschweit got things going with a one-out solo homer, and UIndy piled on with a double from Shannon Schuetz and a bomb from Brooke Montgomery, good for two runs apiece.

Podschweit finished 3-for-4, while Schuetz managed a double in both the fifth and sixth innings.

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds have a quick turnaround as they host non-conference Ohio Dominican for a twin bill on Wednesday, April 3. First pitch from Baumgartner Field is set for 2 p.m. ET.
