Football Hangs 63 on McKendree in Lopsided Win

LEBANON, Ill. – The No. 14 UIndy football team (3-0, 1-0 GLVC) opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play with an impressive 63-21 win at McKendree Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds racked up nine touchdowns while punting just twice to up their conference winning streak to 19 games.

UIndy's point total matched the second highest in school history, second only to the ridiculous 97 points scored on Oakland City way back in 1928. The Hounds also scored 63 at William Jewell in 2015.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Greyhounds were able to take advantage of some early Bearcat miscues to build their lead. McKendree's unsuccessful game-opening onside kick led to a quick UIndy touchdown barely a minute into the game. Later, a Bearcat fumble on their own 20-yard line set up another short field for UIndy, which cashed in on the very next play on a touchdown catch by Aaron Matio.

The Hounds would build a 28-point lead just seconds into the second quarter and went on to add two more TDs before halftime. The Bearcats would not get on the scoreboard until the final minute of the half, making it 42-7 at the break.

When the dust finally settled, UIndy had found the end zone nine times, including six rushing TDs. Back-up QB Jacob Leffew got in on the fun as well, tossing his first career TD pass with a 46-yard bomb to Ryan Topper, while redshirt-freshman Dawson Anderson scored his first collegiate touchdown with a nine-yard rush late in the fourth quarter.

Already the GLVC's all-time leader in passing touchdowns, Edwards broke two more major conference records Saturday, setting new marks for both career passing yards and career total yards. Coincidentally, the latter record was previously held by former McKendree quarterback Isaac Fisher.

Senior running back Tyre Lee led all players with 98 yards on the ground, Al McKeller added 71 rushing yards and three touchdowns and Daveon Bell, who had a season-long 56-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter, finished with three catches for 69 yards.

Joe Lambright amassed seven total tackles and his first interception of the year, while Jack Kuerzi led the Hounds with nine stops.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Edwards finished the day with career numbers of 8,903 passing yards and 10,461 total yards. He's not only the all-time leader in both categories in GLVC history but also the current active leader among all Division II players in both.
- The last time UIndy had six-plus rushing touchdowns came on Halloween in 2015 when the Hounds amassed eight ground scores in a blowout of William Jewell.
- UIndy hit plateaus of 500 total yards and 300 rushing yards for the second straight week.
- True-freshman Kyle Borske notched his first collegiate sack and forced fumble late in the game.

MORE NOTES
UIndy is now 8-0 all-time versus McKendree since the two first hooked up in 2012. Every game in the series has been decided by 10 points or more, with the Greyhounds' average margin of victory now up to 29 points per … The Hounds have not dropped a GLVC contest since October 15, 2016 when they lost at Quincy.

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds host their annual Homecoming game next weekend. UIndy welcomes Southwest Baptist for a 6 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 28.
