Steinwascher's Golden Goal Sends Hounds to 2-0

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy Invitational wrapped up Sunday afternoon at Key Stadium with the most exciting game coming in the last game between the UIndy men's soccer team and No. 19 Saginaw Valley State. The Hounds trailed most of the game, but came back to top the Cardinals 2-1 in overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Saginaw jumped out to the 1-0 lead in the game's 10th minute and held the UIndy offense in check throughout the first half and most of the second half. The Greyhounds had a handful of chances to tie the game, but kept the Cardinals keeper busy, forcing him to make five saves on the day. UIndy felt momentum swing their way at the halfway point of the second half. The Hounds controlled the ball on their side of the field before lighting up the scoreboard to tie the game 1-1 on a Ben Rohder goal coming off an assist from Javier Steinwascher with just under 10 minutes left in regulation.

The momentum stayed with UIndy in the game's closing minutes and throughout the brief overtime period. Mathias Skjeseth just missed an opportunity to put in the game-winner in the closing minutes of the second half and Ben Rohder just missed a shot in the 92nd minute before Javier Steinwascher took a pass from his brother Alejandro and put it in the top right corner to give UIndy the thrilling 2-1 win on Sunday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-The Hounds and Cardinals proved to be two evenly-matched teams. UIndy and Saginaw were fairly identical on shots taken, with the Hounds edging them by one, coming on the game winner.
-Opposing goalkeepers have had their hands full with the UIndy offense compared to UIndy goalkeeper Dimitrios Karousos. Opposing keepers have seen double the shots that Karousos has through two games this season (30 vs. 15)

HOUND BYTES
"Absolutely delighted with today's performance," said Greyhounds coach John Higgins. "Today was our best performance of the season as well. For us to show up with the character to come back from a goal down. We got in those last ten minutes and all I just kept thinking how excellent we were all day and how we needed a match winner. Then Javier gets a great look off an unbelievable assist from Alejandro and seals it. Credit to our boys, I thought we were much fitter than them at the end of the game and it showed. Great start to the season for us, great non-conference matches, now we have to turn our attention to conference play which is always tough but I could not be happier with how this group is progressing right now."
Senior Javier Steinwascher on the win and his game-winning goal, "it was a hard fought game by our boys. We came out a flat and were punished for it after giving up that goal. We turned it around, picked up the tempo of our game and the second half we came out flying and moving the ball extremely well. All we needed was a chance to score and we got it, then went into the overtime and finished it. We do not have a mentality of losing but there is something special about this group. We were able to dig down deeper and found that extra energy that we needed. Dimitrios [Karousos] came up big for us in the goal late in the game, making some unbelievable saves and bailing us out. Vincent [Stone] was brilliant in 1-on-1 situations today who got it across to Alejandro who simply laid it off and it was right there for me and the rest is history."
