SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -Â After being unsure several months ago if there would even be a season, the UIndy cross country teams competed in the first segment of the 2020 GLVC Cross Country Championships: the GLVC East Division Race on Saturday. A number of personal-best times were achieved as both teams qualified for the GLVC Championship A-race, thanks to a third-overall finish from the women and a fourth-place showing by the men.
Lauren Bailey provided a dominating performance, taking the win by over 45 seconds. Her final time of 20:20.71 was not only a personal best for a 6K race, but also garnered a new UIndy record along the way.
Melissa Spencer was another Greyhound to finish inside the top 10, as she ended seventh overall on a time of 22:54.91. The rest of the UIndy scorers included
Hannah Stein (20th; 23:51.24),
Kelsey Dugger (23rd; 23:59.75) and
Emma Treibic (24th; 24:02.71). Stein dropped over a minute in their race for a PR.
The men provided a solid performance overall as junior
Nathan Herbst earned a 90-second personal best on a time of 24:42.72, finishing third overall. Herbst was the Greyhounds' lead runner, with teammate
Chris Switzer reaching the top 10 with his 25:37.57 finish. UIndy had several other top-25 finishers on the 8K course, including
Nyc Sigmon (16th; 25:51.54),
Kieffer Vittetow (20th; 26:12.99) and
Andrew Bixler (22nd; 26:15.78).
"The men had us starting well with several PRs within a solid field today," noted head coach Brad Robinson. "Our ladies achieved several PRs as well, allowing both teams to qualify for the big race in two weeks."
