BOLIVAR, Mo. – A conference clash against a winless opponent resulted in the No. 2-ranked University of Indianapolis men's soccer team collecting a 2-1 victory over Southwest Baptist on Friday night. The Hounds now jump up to 9-0-1 on the season while boosting their Great Lakes Valley Conference mark to 7-0-1.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Playing as one of the top teams in the NCAA Division II, UIndy wasted little time in striking first on the scoreboard in Bolivar. In just the 25th minute,
Cole Rainwater sent one past the goalkeeper on an assist from
Jakob David and
Bryan Moreira.
Â
Playing with a chip on its shoulder, Southwest Baptist refused to fold and eventually tied the match in the 40th minute of play. Because of this, both teams were locked at 1-1 heading into the halftime locker room.
Â
The Greyhounds, who consistently found ways to fire shots at the Bearcats net, finally caught the break they were looking for when
Eli Dulle notched the game-winning goal in the 70th minute on an assist from Rainwater.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-UIndy controlled the offensive pace of play the whole way, sending out 29 total shots compared to just four from SBU.
-There was just a total of 17 fouls called in the full 90 minutes, with the Bearcats corralling a game-high nine.
-With the point tallied by Moreira, he has now found the points category in three of his last four played.
HOUND BYTES
Final thoughts on the match from head coach John Higgins
"[Southwest Baptist] is a much better team than their record suggests. I thought they played well against us in the first half and caused us a few problems, but credit to our boys especially in the second half where I thought we played with real control and discipline. We got the job done in what was a tough environment away from home on a Friday night."
