Hegwood Notches Career High in Win Over McKendree

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis volleyball team picked up their second straight win on Tuesday night, downing McKendree 3-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.  With one regular season match remaining, the Hounds sit at 10-7 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UIndy wasted no time establishing a strong lead in the first set, jumping out to an 8-2 lead.  The Bearcats eventually pulled within five at 21-16, but the Hounds sealed the set victory with four straight points.  Lauren Cullison recorded a pair of kills in the final run.

Neither team could pull away in the second set as it saw 12 lead changes and 22 tied scores.  Tied at 22 the Bearcats recorded two quick points to take a 24-22 lead.  The Hounds fought off set point twice to force extra points.  In their longest set of the season, UIndy fell 33-31.

Momentum was back on UIndy's side to start the third frame, opening with a 4-0 run.  The Hounds exploded for a 7-0 spurt to take a 12-3 advantage.  McKendree evened the score at 17 but UIndy closed out the set with a 7-1 run for a 25-18 victory.  The Hounds posted a match-best 0.278 hitting percentage in the third set.

UIndy led by three midway thru the final set before a 5-0 run put them ahead 21-13.  The Bearcats cut the deficit to five after fighting off a pair of set points before Hannah Huppenbauer sealed the victory for the Hounds with a kill.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Grace Hegwood posted a career high 21 kills, hitting .267 on the night.  Elizabeth Eads and Lauren Cullison also recorded double digit kills with 13 and 10 respectively.
- Alex Equihua tabbed a double-double with 50 assists and 16 digs on the night.
- MaKenna Barnhart paced the defense with 30 digs while Madi Rosenberger and Gillian Santana each tallied 15.
- Eads led the Hounds with five blocks followed by Hegwood at four.

The Hounds close out the regular season at home on Friday night, hosting Illinois Springfield in a crucial match ahead of the GLVC Tournament.  First serve is set for 7 ET inside the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center.
