Men’s Basketball Drops Close One to Saints

INDIANAPOLIS – After a recent run of comebacks and late heroics, the UIndy men's basketball team (9-11, 9-11 GLVC) came up just short Thursday night, falling 60-56 to the visiting Maryville Saints. The Greyhounds nearly erased a 10-point second-half deficit and had a chance to tie in the final seconds but could not get over the hump.

INS & OUTS
Following a 23-23 tie at the half, the Saints (8-11, 8-11) slowly built a lead that would touch double digits, topping out at 44-34 at the eight-and-a-half minute mark.

But the Hounds clawed back with some big shots and eventually took a 52-51 lead with under four to play. Redshirt-freshman Jesse Bingham hit one triple in that stretch while senior Mikail Simmons knocked down a pair, fueling the 18-7 rally.

Later, after a pair of clutch free throw from Cory Miller Jr. with 19.8 seconds left brought the Hounds to within two, the UIndy defense forced a five-second call to get the ball back with 19.8 to go.

Out of the timeout, Miller got the rock at the top of the key, setting up a near-identical situation to the Tuesday's final play. Miller drove the right side of the lane and got a good look, but this time the shot would not fall, forcing the Hounds to foul with only 1.5 seconds left and then seeing the Saints ice it at the foul line.

INSIDE THE BOX
- Both Simmons and Bingham finished with a team-high 16 points, with Dee Montgomery (10 pts) as the only other Hound in double figures.
- Neither team shot better than 37 percent from the field, with UIndy shooting just 6-for-25 (.240) from behind the arc.
- All 19 of the Saints' free throw attempts came in the second half. They connected on 16 of them, including a perfect 11-for-11 effort from senior Daniel Farris.

HOUND BYTES
Assistant Coach Mike Burris with his takeaway…
"Not the outcome we wanted obviously. We've been in some close ones lately, but I thought we got out-toughed a little bit tonight. That's not what we've been doing the last four or five weeks; we've been the tough guys. They beat us to some 50/50 balls, got on the floor a little bit more. It was just a tough loss for our guys."

UP NEXT
Just one more game remains on the regular-season slate as the Greyhounds welcome Lindenwood to Nicoson Hall Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip. Both teams are in the mix one of the eight GLVC Tournament spots.
