Despite Big Bats, Hounds Fall 8-7

WESTFIELD, Ind. – The UIndy baseball team (1-6) endured a tough loss Friday afternoon, falling 8-7 to Missouri S&T (5-4) in the 2021 conference opener. Playing as the home team, the Miners delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth.

The series was moved from Missouri S&T's campus to the turf fields of Grand Park in Westfield, Ind., due to poor conditions in Rolla, Mo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Going into the top of the ninth, the Hounds and Miners were tied 6-6. Slugger Trey Smith stepped to the place with two outs, with a one and one count, the ball was gone out of left field. Putting UIndy up 7-6 to end the half inning. Cheers erupted from the Hounds bench.

Missouri S&T answered back, scoring two runs to end the inning. A RBI double secured the win for the Miners.

The Hounds were led by senior third baseman Hunter Waning, who scored the Greyhounds first homerun of the season, bringing Trey Smith home and putting the Greyhounds within two of the Miners. Waning finished the day with two RBIs and three hits in five at bats. Smith led the Hounds by tallying two RBIs, three hits and three runs.

To start the seventh inning, Reid Rector slammed the ball out of center field to post his first homerun as a Greyhound. The sophomore outfielder transferred to the Hounds this season from Rend Lake.

Matt Rearick took the loss for the Greyhounds.
