INDIANAPOLIS – The #19 University of Indianapolis women's soccer team picked up their fourth straight win on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Southwest Baptist in GLVC action at Key Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UIndy put the pressure on early, firing off seven shots in the first 15 minutes of play. The Hounds got on the board in the 35th minute in unique fashion. From the near corner Maddy Theis sent a cross pass that was intended for Alexi Hardie. A Bearcat defender got a foot on it and ended up putting the ball in the net for the Hounds. The own goal gave UIndy a 1-0 lead that they took to halftime.
The Hounds defense dominated the second half as UIndy controlled the pace of the game. A stellar defensive effort held the Bearcats shotless for the entire game. The last time the Hounds held their opponent to zero shots was the season opener in 2016 where the Hounds beat Salem International 17-0.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
UIndy ruled the box score, outshooting Southwest Baptist 22-0 on the day. The Hounds earned seven corner kicks to the Bearcats two.
Maria Herrero paced the Hounds with four shots, two of which were on goal. Kiki Sauceda, Taylor Peck and Elena Espinosa each recorded three shots.
HOUNDS BYTES
Head Coach Holly Cox
"We had a great defensive effort from our group today. The ladies worked extremely hard defending all the way from the front to our back line. We didn't give Southwest Baptist a sniff at goal. This week we need to work at being more dangerous in the attack. We didn't create as many clear cut opportunities that we would of liked too. We have to be hungry to put the game away...especially against tough opposition. It's going to be another tough battle this weekend."
UP NEXT
The Hounds hit the road this upcoming week for a pair of GLVC matches. UIndy will take on Drury on Thursday followed by Missouri S&T on Saturday.
