Hounds’ Late Surge Ties Saints

INDIANAPOLIS - After being ranked as the No. 4 team in the recent Division II poll, the UIndy men's soccer team (10-0-2, 10-0-2 GLVC) took on a ranked head-to-head contest against No. 12 Maryville Saints (9-2-1, 9-2-1 GLVC) on Friday night, the two teams in a back-and-forth duel. The two teams ended the contest in a tie, finishing the 1-1 contest after two overtimes.

INS & OUTS
The first half didn't feature too much Greyhound offense, the Hounds only contesting two shots in the first 45 minutes of the contest. Despite Maryville's five shots, Dimitrios Karousos didn't need to record a single save, the senior garnering four total in the game. One of the Hounds' two shots was on target for the score, the Saints just reaching far enough to prevent it with a save.

Maryville was able to strike first in the contest, knocking in a goal at the 57' mark in the second half on Friday night. The Greyhounds were only able to respond with two corner kicks after the goal, pummeling two more shots by Cole Rainwater on the wide right side of the goal. Despite the struggles on offense though, Jeremy Fechtman was able to take a free kick for the Hounds right to the right side of the goal, finding a streaking Makel Rasheed head above the rest to tie the game at the 77' mark. The game was tight the entire way, including a save by Karousos in the regulation's final eight seconds. The overtime segments provided just as a nail-biting experience, Maryville taking four shots at the Hounds' goal in the second overtime alone. Once again in the game's final 17 seconds, Karousos was able to make another final save for the Hounds to keep the game from giving them their first loss of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- UIndy's nine shots marks a season low for the team, Maryville's 16 in comparison marks a season-high given up.
- The Saints' assisted goal is the first one the Hounds have given up this season.
- Karousos' four saves ties his season-high, the senior now totaling 20 on the season.

HOUND BYTES
Head coach John Higgins on the team's efforts against the Saints …

"Credit to Maryville, they were great tonight. Our boys did a great job to battle back in the game and get something out of it without playing to our usual level. This game gives us a chance now to win the league on Senior Day [on Sunday]. We are beat up at the moment, so we need to get healthy for the end of the season and the GLVC tournament."

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds will go back to the drawing board and make their final preparations for the last home game of the season on Sunday, taking on Lindenwood on April 11 at Key Stadium. The Senior Day match will kick off at around 2:30 p.m.
