ST. LOUIS - The No. 4 UIndy men's soccer team (11-0-3, 11-0-3 GLVC) finished the regular season on Saturday, the Hounds taking the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons (7-4-3, 7-4-3) on Friday afternoon in St. Louis. The Greyhounds earned their ninth shutout of the season to remain unbeaten, but ended the game in a draw due to not finding a goal either.
INS & OUTS
The contest was even almost even the entire way, the first half only holding two shots overall. Both takes were by the Hounds, Makel Rasheed and Noah Yohannes each taking a chance in the first half of action. The back half of the game contained more action for the teams, six shots were attempted at the goals in the final 45 minutes of regulation. Seth Ward was the only Greyhound to take multiple shots during that time span, only being on-goal to eventually become saved. Dimitrios Karousos made a save in the middle of the half to prevent a Triton-lead, deflecting an attempt from the lower center of the goal.
The overtime segments were complete opposites, the first only providing a shot off-goal for Missouri-St. Louis. The second overtime brought a high-powered UIndy offense, the team surging three shots in the final four minutes of the contest. Cole Rainwater was able to see an attempt at the 109' mark, but the Triton goalie deflected the shot from the lower right side of the goal to keep the score from changing. Karousos would tally a second save in the second overtime, an UMSL shot wouldn't get past above the senior's head.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Karousos' nine shutouts best his seven from the 2019 season, the Athens, Greece native collecting 27 saves across the 14 games.
- The Greyhounds' unbeaten season will claim the No. 1 seed in the GLVC Tournament.
- UIndy only allowed four shots for UMSL, the least since their tie against Illinois Springfield a month ago.
HOUND BYTES
Head coach John Higgins on the team's historic season …
"We play in one of the toughest conferences in the nation, and for us to go undefeated is a great accomplishment. Our defensive record has been fantastic this year, and that was shown again [on Friday] by earning another clean sheet. We need to rest and recover in order to start the post season with the right energy and excitement."
