"I'm obviously disappointed that we didn't get the job done today. This one stings," admitted Head Coach
Brent Nicoson. "We were in position and gave too much away on the back nine, and ultimately coming down the stretch as well. We just didn't play like a championship team today. Maryville is too good of a team to make late mistakes against. We have to get back to work before we head to Kansas City (for the NCAA Regional).
Junior
Keegan Bronnenberg was the lone Hound to win his final pairing. The Muncie, Ind., native fired a two-under 70 to best a solid round of 73 from Maryville's Will Holan. Senior
Erik Edwards secured a half point for UIndy, as he and Keenan Flemming carded matching 79s.
"Keegan played very well today and was solid during the entire tournament," Nicoson said. "He beat a very good player in Will Holan. I also thought Oliver played extremely well this week too; he just got beat by a very good round of golf by Alex Locke today.
"It's our first loss to a conference opponent all year; that's a pretty good run we were on, and I'm proud of our guys for battling hard this week."
UP NEXT
The Greyhounds await the announcement of the 2021 NCAA Division II Regional field, which is set for Friday, April 23. The regional itself is set for May 6-8 in Kansas City, Mo. The Greyhounds were ranked No. 1 in the latest
Midwest rankings.
TUESDAY RECAP
The top-seeded Hounds continued their quest for a conference title, sweeping Missouri S&T in the medal/match play semifinals of the GLVC Championships, held at Fox Run Golf Club in Eureka, Mo. The 5-0 win sets up a finals matchup with No. 2-seed Maryville, who dispatched Missouri-St. Louis, 3 ½-2 ½.
The medal/match play final was originally slated for Tuesday afternoon, but inclement weather pushed back the deciding match to Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET (weather permitting).
The matchup represents a rubber match of sorts, as UIndy and Maryville faced off against each of the last two GLVC finals*, with UIndy winning the 2018 conference title and Maryville taking the 2019 crown.
Battling less-than-ideal conditions, all five Greyhounds won their semifinal pairing Monday, highlighted by senior
Erik Edwards and his 12-stroke victory in the first slot.
"I'm really proud of our guys," notes Head Coach
Brent Nicoson. "They played really solid this morning in very tough conditions to beat a very good team 5-0.
"Erik went out first and set the tone, shooting 31 on a demanding front nine. Everyone else fed off of his hot start and took care of business. It should be a great championship match tomorrow against a team we have a ton of respect for in Maryville. They are very well coached and have great players in all five positions."
Below are the rest of the results from Tuesday morning.
